George Unger, age 86 passed away at Altona Eastview Place at 5:17 p.m. on Friday January 26, 2024 surrounded by his family.
He was born December 1937 in Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, Mexico to Jacob D Unger and Agatha Friesen. He came to Canada when he was one year old. He was baptized on June 9, 1957 at Austin, MB at the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church by Bishop John A Friesen. He got married to Susanna Wall on September 21, 1958 and moved to southern Manitoba and found work in Morris. While in Morris, their son, Harry was born in 1960 and within a few years, they moved to Winkler to pursue work at Kroeker Farms. They had three daughters born in Winkler; MaryAnne in 1962, Gloria in 1965 and Betty in 1968. Dad was a hard worker all his life. He was a trucker for many years and then ended up working at Monarch Industries. He moved to the U.S. where he worked at Crystal Sugar in Drayton, North Dakota until he was asked to retire at the age of 68 years. Dad moved back to Canada in 2016 and lived in Altona to be close to his family. When his health began to decline, he moved to Eastview Place in July 2022 and learned to love the staff who took good care of him until his passing.
He is survived by his children, Harry (Wanda) Unger, MaryAnne (John) Dyck, Gloria (Ben) Wiebe and Betty (Abe) Redekop as well as 13 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
We as a family are grateful and privileged to have gotten to spend time with dad and got to make some memories with him these last years.
