Leona was born on April 19, 1944 in Winkler, Manitoba to the parents of Dan & Helena Giesbrecht. She was the oldest of 5 children. Leona began a career in Real Estate in 1971 and continued for 46 years. She enjoyed helping people buy or sell their homes. She was well respected by her colleagues and by anyone who came to meet her and got to know her. She was instrumental in starting Block Parents of Winnipeg, Rossbrook House a safe place for indigenous people to come instead of the streets and Esther House which provides a safe and supportive sober living environment for women in recovery from addiction and help assists women to move back into the community with a strong sense of confidence in their abilities to deal with their addictions and move forward in their lives. She was very active in the church community at Bethel Mennonite Church being on various committees. One being the witness committee where now in each Sunday Bulletin reads “Recognizing that we are all treaty people, with gratitude we acknowledge our gathering on Treaty #1 land and the traditional homeland of the Metis Nation." She wanted to make the world a better place for her family as they were very important to her.

We want to "Thank" the Nurses and the staff on Lodge 7 at Deer Lodge Centre for the excellent care they gave our mother, sister and grandmother. Your kindness and caring was a blessing. She felt very special and loved by all of you.
