Anne Goertzen (nee Derksen)

1930 – 2020

On Tuesday August 4, 2020 at Boundary Trails Health Centre, Anne Goertzen, age 90 of Winkler, MB formerly of Reinfeld went to her eternal rest.

Anne was born February 22, 1930 to Isaac and Katharina Derksen in Reinfeld, Manitoba. She was the 10th child out of 14.  She grew up in Neuenberg where she attended grade school. She accepted Jesus as her Saviour at age 14 and was baptized on the confession of her faith in Jesus Christ on June 5, 1949. She married our Dad, John A. Goertzen, on July 17, 1952.

Mom was always a hard worker, energetic and compassionate.  She and Dad farmed near Reinfeld until Dad’s health dictated they leave the farm. They moved to Winkler where she started employment at Salem Home.  She worked there 18 years: 5 as a Health Care Aide and the rest as the Activities Director. In 1990 she spearheaded the Palliative Care Program at Bethel Hospital and was the coordinator for a number of years.

Her greatest joy was in serving others. She taught Sunday School, served in church committees and was the church grandma and mom to many and was also known as the 13th street grandma while she and Dad lived there. She loved her family dearly and visits from the grandchildren and great grandchildren were so special. She enjoyed cooking for them and always offered to baby-sit the great grandchildren.

Mom battled cancer, depression, anxiety and fibromyalgia—she had a difficult decade in her 70’s. Three months after Dad’s death in 2010, she had a special encounter with God over night and was healed of her pain. She packed up her walker and with a renewed zeal for life, she went on to touch many more lives, helping wherever she could.  She always had a heart for the frail elderly and started to volunteer at Salem again, never considering herself too old. In 2019 she was recognized for 160 hours of volunteer work at Salem. After her move to Cedar Estates in 2013, she also started to volunteer at MCC. She got herself involved in any way she could at Cedar and we jokingly called her the Activity Director of Cedar.

Mom was energetic and determined to the very end. Her love for God was evident and one of her favourite scripture verses was Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

On Monday, July 27th, a blood clot in her arm sent her to Winnipeg for surgery. Although she looked like she would recover, she had a major stroke on Wednesday night, July 29th. Her four children were able to be with her until she passed Tuesday morning, August 4th.

She leaves to mourn her passing her sons, Dave and Betty of Winkler, John and Alvina of Reinfeld, Bernie and Darlene of Winkler, daughter Nancy and Don Falk of Winkler, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, one sister, three brothers-in-law, six sisters-in-law and many, many friends. She was predeceased by her husband, John A Goertzen in 2010 and two grandchildren, her parents, four sisters and eight brothers.

Memorial service on Friday August 7, 2010 at the Winkler Mennonite Church with interment prior at the Reinfeld Cemetery.

We are thankful for the excellent care Mom received at Health Sciences Centre and Boundary Trails Health Centre. We would also like to thank the neighbours at Cedar for always looking out for Mom. Thanks to Wiebe Funeral Home for their compassionate care. If friends so desire donations may be made in Anne’s memory to BTHC Foundation Palliative Care Box 2000 Winkler, MB R6W 1H8. Thank you, Mom, for being a great Mom and excellent role model for us. You have left us with such a rich legacy.
