Katherine Penner (nee Reimer)

1937 - 2020

Our Mom, Katherine (Tina) Penner was born on August 1, 1937 in the village of Blumenfeld, MB to Wilhelm and Anna Reimer. She received her formal and informal education in a two-room school in the village of Blumenfeld. Mom was baptized upon the confession of her faith in the Old Colony Mennonite Church by Bishop Froese in 1958. Mom helped on her parents’ farm, where she acquired skills of being resourceful, industrious and thriftiness. She was a sociable person and enjoyed life in the village, forming many lifelong friendships.

Our parents, Ben Penner and Tina Reimer were married on a beautiful fall day, on September 17, 1961. They settled on Dad's farm in the Mountain City School District, Southwest of Morden. Mom being sociable missed her life in the village, however, adjusted well to life on the farm and the neighborhood. During the first years of marriage, Mom kept busy creating a home, helping our Dad with farm chores and field work in the summer; sewing, crocheting, and mending in the winter. Our mom enjoyed cooking and was an excellent cook. She knew how to prepare a table set with large amount of delicious food. She always had a large garden, preserving the produce for the winter and sharing extra produce with family and friends. Mom enjoyed yard work and kept a very tidy farmyard. As mentioned earlier, Mom enjoyed sewing, therefore, during the 1970's she opened our home for sewing lessons. This allowed her to strengthen her skills in sewing and to socialize in the community.

Mom and Dad enjoyed travelling to South America, California, South Dakota and across the Prairie Provinces. It was always interesting the souvenirs they would acquire during these adventures. Our parents retired to the City of Winkler in 1995. This move allowed them to enjoy a slower pace of life. During the summer months they would often be found touring the countryside with friends and neighbours checking crops. Mom always planted a lot of flowers surrounding their home on Cottonwood Drive. She continued to have a large garden, care for fruit trees, and produce a pantry filled with canned produce from her garden.  The move to Cedar Estates in October 2019 was short lived, she thoroughly enjoyed condo living and made new friends.

Mom was a gracious, determined, positive full of life individual. She kept many records and saved cards and bulletins of milestones from extended families. Mom enjoyed modern technology and learnt to text, Facetime and Google, finding interesting documentaries on YouTube. She enjoyed the calls she received from her Grandchildren, via Facetime and the pictures they sent by text. Mom was relatively healthy, enjoying good health into her late seventies, caring for Dad in his later years, taking him to the home farm or off to the local coffee shop. She was extremely lonely after our Dad passed in 2015, however she reached out and made new friends. In December 2018 mom was diagnosed with colon cancer. She struggled with the diagnosis, accepted it, and struggled with the side effects of chemo. After wrestling with rapidly declining health, she was admitted to Boundary Trails Health Centre on April 24, 2020. She fought a good fight until the early morning hours on Sunday May 10, 2020.

She is survived by daughter, Marge and her two children, Heather and Matthew; son, Peter and Edna and their two children, Chelsea(David) and Shepard Owaisi, Derrick (Ashley); son, Bill and Valerie and their two children, Tiffany and Colton; daughter, Barb and Myron Derksen and their two children, Caleb (Danica) and Hannah. Mom is survived by brother, Bill A and Tina Reimer and sister, Mary Hamm. She was predeceased by her parents, Wilhelm and Anna Reimer, brother, Peter Reimer, sisters, Ann Reimer, Elizabeth Enns and Agatha Rempel. She will also be missed by Dad's siblings, Marge Unrau, Mary (Dave) Penner, Abe and Susie Penner and Mary (George) Penner. She will also be missed by a host of friends and relatives.

Private funeral service with interment at Westridge Memorial Gardens. If friends so desire, donations be made to the Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation designated to Cancer Care.  As a family, we would like to thank the medical team for the excellent care Mom received at Boundary Trails Health Centre, visits, calls, food and prayers we have received during this time of loss. We will miss your determined spirit, Mom.   Rest in Peace
