Martha Hiebert (nee Unger)

1938 - 2020

Mom was born in Plum Coulee on June 29th, 1938 to Peter and Katherina (Derksen) Unger. Mom grew up in a large family with three brothers and seven sisters. She always felt she had a very happy childhood. They had the coulee close by and made use of it in summer and winter. In summer they would swim and boat, in winter they skated. Mom got her education in the Plum Coulee school. Her dream was always of becoming a nurse, but her mom needed her at home to help. She attended the Bergthaler Church and went to Sunday School there. She sang in the girls' choir and later in the church choir which she enjoyed very much, a love that she would have the rest of her life. Mom accepted Christ as her Saviour and was baptized May 22, 1955 by Bishop Jakob M. Pauls. In 1956 Mom left home and worked in Winnipeg for a year. Then in 1957 she started working in the Bethel Hospital in Winkler in the kitchen, which she really enjoyed. In 1956 she met the love of her life, a farmer at that, John Hiebert. They were married on June 29th, 1958 in the Kronsweide Sommerfeld Church with Bishop John Friesen officiating. In 1959 their daughter, Carol was born, 1965 saw the arrival of a son, Robert and then in 1970 their youngest, a daughter, Barbara was born. The first months Mom and Dad lived in Roland, MB. Then they moved to the La Riviere area where Dad worked for a farmer, Henry Wiebe, for 22 years. Mom and Dad bought a half section of land and then later another half section. In 1980, Mom and Dad bought their own machinery and farmed on their own. In 1985 Mom even learned to drive tractor and also hauled the grain from the field in combining time. Then in 1989 they had a house built in Morden where their son, Rob and his wife first lived until Mom and Dad retired.

Mom was diagnosed in 2003 with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. She was part of a Study for a medication for IPF. This drug was very helpful for Mom and certainly extended her time with us. In November of 2019 Mom was admitted to hospital for the last time. She could hardly wait to see Jesus as her breathing became more and more laboured. May 11th in the early morning hours she peacefully entered into His presence.

Mom leaves to mourn her loving husband of almost 62 years, John; daughter, Carol (Ken) Unger and their children, Wes (Tanya) Unger and their son, Alex; Amanda (Adam) Beaudry and their children, Madison and Eli; son, Rob (Tina) Hiebert and their children, Jeremy (Rachel) Hiebert and sons, Justin and Andrew, Brian (Bev) Hiebert; daughter, Barbara Kirk and her children, Jeffrey (Lexi) Harms and sons, Josh and Jansen; Derrick Harms. She also leaves to mourn sisters, Anne and Jim Brown, Esther, Elisabeth (Bet) and Casey Jones, and Dora as well as sisters-in-law, Lillis (Jake) Unger, Anne (Abe) Unger as well as Betty Peters, Mary and Bill Giesbrecht, Helen Braun, Tina Hiebert, Annie Peters; also many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Abe, Jake, Pete and Willie and by sisters, Tina, Mary, and Lena. She was also predeceased by a great grandson, Nolan.

We, the family, want to express our sincere thanks to Dr. Homik, Dr. Holmes, the staff on the Medical Unit as well as the Rehab Unit. The care Mom received was second to none. Thank you to Jay and Jessie Wiebe and BTHC Chaplain, Stephen Siemens for their Spiritual Care. Thank you everyone for your prayers, phone calls, visits, emails, texts in support for Mom and Dad and our family.

Private graveside service on Thursday May 14, 2020 at Southside Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Martha’s memory to the Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation designated to Palliative Care.

Carol and Ken,
Our condolences on the loss of your mother, we know from our own experiences how hurtful this time must be for you. No doubt it is complicated by the isolation from family support. Remember that a person is not truly gone as long as they are remembered.
