Helena (Helen) Suderman (nee Harms)

1926 - 2020

Helen Suderman, age 94, passed into eternity on Tuesday April 21, 2020 at Salem Home with her son at her side.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jacob Suderman in 1977, daughter-in-law, Lynne Suderman, son-in-law, Garry Pudgeon, three brothers and one sister. She will be sadly missed by her children, Jake Suderman, Linda and Keith Angers, Anne Pudgeon, Margaret and Larry Kehler, Mary and Cornie Wall, Abe and Chris Suderman, John Suderman, 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Mom cherished her family, and would do anything for them, always working hard to make things better. She was strong, gentle and quiet. Rather than words, she expressed her love through her actions.

Helen was born January 29, 1926 at Eichenfeld, Mexico to Abram and Helena Harms. Mom immigrated to Canada with her family as a young girl and grew up in southern Manitoba with her eight siblings. She was baptized upon the confession of her faith as a young woman. Mom and Dad were married on September 2, 1945.  As a family, we were blessed by her many talents. She was a gifted seamstress, cook and caregiver. Coming home from school we were frequently welcomed by the smell of fresh-baked buns and cinnamon buns. She liked trying new things from recipes to flowers, and more. Mom really enjoyed her flowers and gladly shared her gardens whenever we came to visit. Mom was always striving to further educate herself. When her children went to school, she was also busy, taking classes and courses, as well as getting her driver’s license. A highlight in her life was when she received her health care aid certificate. She enjoyed the many years she spent working with the residents at Salem Home, making personal connections through the compassionate care she showed each one. Due to health issues she needed to retire before she was ready, at the age of 62. Just after her 78th birthday, Mom moved into Salem Home and spent the next sixteen years there as a resident. The family is very grateful for the loving care Mom received at Salem Home from the dedicated staff and volunteers. Your kindness helped brighten many moments throughout the years.
