Helena Funk (nee Rempel)
1930 - 2020
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother Helena (Helen) Funk. Helen was born July 10, 1930, to Jacob and Justina Remple in the village of Blumenort. She was baptized on June 6,1949 and her love and commitment to her faith remained the guiding force of her life. She married Frank on July 15, 1951 and they moved to Reinland before settling on the farm near Winkler where they lived and raised their family of six children until their retirement in Winkler. Mom lived a joyful and busy life, active in the church, teaching Sunday school and involved with the women’s institute as well as many charities, while raising her family and working for many years as an aide at Eden Mental Health Centre. She was a talented artist, and leaves her grandchildren with wonderful memories of the crafts and projects she shared with them. She loved gardening with Frank and their homes were always surrounded by flowers. They enjoyed traveling and visited many areas of the United States, eventually spending some winters in Arizona. After Frank’s passing in 2002, Mom continued on in their home on second street until she felt it was time to move to Crocus. She spent many great years there in spite of some serious health issues, and she enjoyed visiting and playing games with her friends and family. Last year as her health continued to deteriorate she decided to move to Salem, where she received wonderful care for the last months of her life. It was hard for her to give up her home and independence, but in spite of the challenges, she always had a warm smile and a twinkle in her eyes to greet her many visitors, family and friends.
Mom leaves to mourn her six children, Dennis (Betty), Laura, Shirley, Ruth (Gerald), Gerry, and Rose (Glenn), 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She leaves also her dear siblings and many in-laws, nieces and nephews and friends, including her great friend, Eva Giesbrecht. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Frank, one brother and two sisters.
