Karen JoAnn Hiebert (nee Giesbrecht)

1965 – 2019

Karen Hiebert (54) of Morden, MB (formerly of Winkler) passed away peacefully at Boundary Trails Health Centre on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 with her husband and parents by her side.  She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Rodney. She also leaves to mourn her passing her parents, Jim and Dianne Giesbrecht of Winkler; sister, Shauna Giesbrecht of Winkler; sister, Shelley & Weldon Klassen of Winkler (niece Nicole and nephew Mitchell); mother-in-law, Beverly Hiebert of Morden, sister-in-law, Lawanda & Ike Friesen of Morden; brother-in-law Murray & Jennifer Hiebert of Pambrun, SK and their respective families. She was predeceased by her father-in-law, Dave Hiebert.

Karen was born in Winkler, MB on April 9, 1965; the first of three daughters. She was baptized upon confession of her faith on May 22, 1983 in the Winkler Evangelical Mennonite Mission Church.  Karen graduated from Grace General Hospital, School of Nursing on June 26, 1986. Immediately following, she began her very successful nursing career at Morden District General Hospital. Karen’s passion for caring for others inspired her to volunteer within the community as a Winkler Emergency Services ambulance attendant for many years. She also taught ambulance training to new recruits. On May 15, 1999 Karen married Rodney Hiebert. They were blessed with 20 years of marriage. In 2001, with the merger of the Morden and Winkler hospitals, Karen started working on the Medical Ward and then Emergency at Boundary Trails Health Centre. In 2006, she successfully completed the Surgery Program and became a surgical nurse in the Operating Room at Boundary Trails. She found this challenging yet very rewarding and continued to work up until February 14, 2019 - when cancer made her body too weak to continue. After thirty-three years of caring for people, Karen found it very difficult to be a patient. “I’m the one who should be looking after you” was said to many nurses who entered her room. And, even during this difficult time, she continued to teach and encourage nurses, heath care aids, other staff members and volunteers.  Approaching retirement, Karen didn’t know what she should do, so she asked God for direction. He decided to call her home. She accepted her diagnosis as God’s Will and continued praising Him through song. Being a skillful pianist, she never left her piano, or the chapel organ, without playing her favorite hymn:

O Lord, My God…”How Great Thou Art”

Funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday September 9, 2019 at the Winkler EMMC with interment at Westridge Memorial Gardens.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Karen’s memory to the Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation designated to Surgery or Palliative Care or to Cancer Care Manitoba.
