 Kevin Edward Wilson

1983 - 2019

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Kevin, our sweet son, husband, brother, uncle, and friend. He died peacefully at his home in Winnipeg on a beautiful sunny afternoon following a prolonged battle with alcohol addiction. Although not feeling well, he was engaged in conversation with family and friends until the end. Kevin is survived by his parents, Kathy and Rob, his ex-wife and beloved friend, Tracy, his sister, Laura and nephew, Zach and his brother, Dave, sister-in-law, Leanne, and nieces, Emily and Amy.

Kevin was born in Manitou, Manitoba and grew up on a small farm located in the Pembina valley. As a little kid of 4 years, he, his brother, sister, grandpa and parents built, by hand, a large log home and developed their little farm. For the next 14 years, his life revolved around music, friends, cats, dogs, horses, goats, pigs, and whatever else he could sneak onto the property and, sometimes, into the house. He left home to further his academic calling, spending four years at the University of Manitoba and graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He met a core of good friends that remained a central part of his life. He moved into a career with Manitoba Hydro, where he excelled as an Engineer. He loved his work and got to return to the north where he had spent a lot of childhood time fishing with family. In 2010, Kevin bought himself a home in Winnipeg and in 2011, our “Little Stinker” met his wonderful and beautiful bride-to-be, Tracy. Tragedy struck in 2013 when Kevin fell and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. He was hospitalized for many months with no guarantee of surviving and almost no chance of returning to work. Somehow, he pulled out of all this and did return, functioning again as an engineer and continuing where he left off. The happiest day of his life was October 12, 2014, when he married Tracy. Throughout his life, Kevin had a wonderful support group in his family, wife, friends, neighbours, colleagues, and employer.

Kevin was such a light in the lives of those who knew him, understood him, and spent time with him. He was so talented intellectually, musically, and artistically, and was such a sensitive and caring soul. It seems long-term effects from the original injury, combined with his ongoing medical issues, followed him, and, over the last eighteen months of his life, appeared to somewhat overwhelm him. Our beautiful boy has gone too soon, but his life was filled with love, fun, music, adventure, a great career, and travel. And to his end, he was loved, supported, and respected by friends and family. We told Kevin once that if something should ever happen to any of our children, Mom and I would never be the same, but we would be okay. “I would never want any of you to be held back,” he replied, and we won’t. We know we will see him, talk to him, and visit him as much as ever.

I had the pleasure to work with Kevin at Whispering Pines. He was a very talented and sensitive person. I enjoyed our conversations immensely, especially when we got to talking about music, or the books he was reading. Kevin was a huge fan of Jeff Buckley. At the end of our last yoga class together, I remembered to play ‘Hallelujah’ for Kevin. I will always think of him fondly when I hear this song.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family. I’ve known Kevin for almost 20 years. We had recently reconnected on Facebook, and he helped me through a very emotional experience I had. I don’t know if I would’ve made it through without him.
He was a good person with a kind and loving heart, and I’m so grateful for his friendship. ❤️
