Kristin Heida Winona Lulashnyk (nee Johnson)
1931 - 2019
Kristin Heida Winona Johnson was born September 7, 1931 in Winnipegosis, MB. “Nona” was the 3rd of 13 children born to Malmfridur (Freda) and Peter Johnson. She grew up in Winnipegosis attending school there and then worked at the local drug store. Nona married John Lulashnyk on February 8, 1950. They lived and worked in many Manitoba and Saskatchewan towns and villages as John’s work as a CN station agent took them to increasingly busy sites. They had two sons, Russel (Donna nee Seversen) and Leslie (Sandy nee Holts). There are four grandsons, Joel (Marla), Ben (Natalie), Robert (Taylor) and Kelly (Taylor), six great grandsons, Rogan, Kief, Parker, Nolan, Levi, Landon and one great granddaughter, Noelle. She loved all of them very much as evidenced by her big smiles and hugs whenever they visited.
Nona was very active in her life playing ball and curling. She spent hours crocheting, knitting, gardening, working with ceramics, reading books, playing cards, doing puzzles and of course taking in a bingo game whenever she could find one. Nona was an active member of the United and Presbyterian churches and the community choir in Winnipegosis when she and John retired there in 1989. John and Nona made many holiday trips around Canada and to Texas where Les and his family live. Even after John passed away Nona continued to travel to Texas once or twice a year. In August of 2018, Nona moved to an assisted living complex in Morden MB to be closer to her family who live in Morden and Winnipeg. Unfortunately, Nona had cancer when she arrived and although she fought hard to beat it and received excellent care from her family Doctor Kevin Earl, her grandson Dr. Ben Lulashnyk and the team at BTHC CancerCare, the cancer was too aggressive and she passed away May 11, 2019.
Nona was predeceased by her parents and six of her siblings: Mona, Thora, Rosalee, Sandra, Danny and Brian, four sisters-in-law, (Marg, Leona and Shirley Johnson and Jennie Lulashnyk) and five brothers-in-law, (Ken Porter, Marvin Sass, Paul Laidlaw, Frank Seller and Doug Rognvaldson). Those who remain to share her memory are the immediate family, brothers, Peter (Evelyn), Fred, Bev (Vicky), Ernie, Robin (Betty) and sister, Siunn (Ron) Anderson, four sisters-in-law, Karen Johnson, Wanda Johnson, Anne Rognvaldson and Olga Seller and one brother-in-law, Gary Shapiro. There are many nieces, nephews, cousins along with friends who will miss Aunty Nona.
