"I was born to my parents, Diedrich and Maria Neudorf (nee Klassen) in 1919 in Michalburg, Russia. Times were getting bad with the revolution and hunger, so my parents decided to go to Canada. In June 1925, we left on the Rig Empress of Scotland. Six weeks later, the ship landed at Quebec. From there we went by train till Plum Coulee where our relatives met us. They had been here for some years. A couple of days later, Dad got work on the farm. We moved to Neuenberg where I started school. The next year, we moved to Chortitz where Dad and my brother worked for Mr. Isaac Sirluck on the farm. I went to school and grew up in Chortitz. I had 1 brother and 2 sisters. I was the youngest. In 1942, I got baptized by Bishop David Schultz and became a member of the Winkler Bergthaler Church where I remained. In 1944 in May I married my best friend, Abram Penner. We were married by William Peters. Our marriage was 36 years. When he passed away suddenly in the hospital, I remained there for 10 years longer. I sold the place and moved to Winkler where I enjoyed myself. I was in good health until 2004 when I fell and broke my hip. I could walk again for which I was thankful. I had the homecare coming in once a week to give me a bath which I couldn’t do. Thank you very much ladies, God bless you. I am predeceased by both parents, my brother and 2 sisters also 2 nieces. Survived by nieces and nephews and 3 sisters-in-law."

On Friday May 10, 2019 at Salem Home in Winkler, MB, Kate Penner age 99 years formerly of Chortitz went to her eternal rest.

Kate was a wonderful sweet lady. I got to know her well at Salem since she occupied a room next to my Mom. She and my Mom became very good friends. I will miss seeing her! It was a pleasure knowing her.
