 Cornelius (Neil) Neufeld
1929 - 2019
On Thursday, April 18th, 2019, Neil passed away peacefully at Salem Home with his wife and family by his side.
Cornelius Neufeld (Neil) was born in 1929 near Milden, Saskatchewan.  He went to Passchendaele school near Hague, Saskatchewan.  He was baptized at the age of 17 in the Hague Mennonite Church.  It was also in those years that he met Marie Loewen.  In 1948 Marie’s family moved to Winkler, Manitoba to find work and Neil followed shortly thereafter.  They were married in Winkler in 1951 and moved that same year to Winnipeg.  They have three children, Jeanette, Linda and Clifford.  Dad always said that marrying Mom was the best decision he ever made.
Neil started working for Coca-Cola in Winnipeg where he stayed for 30 years. In 1982 Neil at the age of 53, made a bold move to quit his job and join MCC to volunteer in Germany working with Mennonite immigrants coming from Russia.  This was a personal goal to give back to the organization (MCC) that had helped to bring his parents to Canada in 1923.  Neil and Marie served there for 2 ½ years before returning to Winnipeg. Neil and Marie moved back to Winker in 1986 when Neil took the position of General Manager at Lion’s Manor.  This role was well suited to his outgoing and compassionate nature, and he retired from that job at the age of 73.  After retiring, Neil volunteered at the Winkler MCC store where he continued to help until well into his 80’s.  Throughout his life, Neil participated in many leadership roles within his community and church.  He had a wonderful singing voice, and music was always a big part of his life, leading the church choir in Winnipeg for many years.  We remember many evenings, after we were in bed, hearing Mom and Dad learning music in the basement, Mom playing piano, and both of them singing.  He held positions on the church council for many years, as well as serving as deacon.  After moving back to Winkler, he served on board positions at the Winkler EMMC church and EMMC Conference, Salem home for the aged, and the MCC board.  In everything he did, he was an encourager, and a force for cohesion and positivity.
Neil had a huge heart, a compassionate and peacemaking nature, and was a devoted husband to Marie and a loving father and role model to his 3 children, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  He is survived by his wife, Marie, daughter, Jeanette & Howard Zacharias, granddaughter, Cristina Zacharias & Ed Reifel, great grandchildren, Martin and Marie,  granddaughter, Leanne Zacharias & Jimmie Kilpatrick, great grandson, Townes,  daughter, Linda Nikkel and son, Cliff Neufeld & Joanne Astle, grandson, Ivan & Melissa Neufeld, great grandchildren, Riley and Len,  granddaughter, Leona & Nestor Gil, great granddaughter, Lily and granddaughter, Naomi & Julian Kroeker.

#4 Gerald and Pat Gerbrandt 2019-04-22 09:39
Mr. Neufeld encouraged the entire Gerbrandt family, and Tina Klassen (Pat's mom) too. His gentle godliness, the music he and Marie shared generously to bless others, and his wonderful smile are gifts for which we thank God. May our Father's comfort to you, the Neufeld family, be as generous as His gift to us in Neil.
