Gerald James Unrau

1966-2018

It is with great sadness that we announce that Gerald Unrau, age 51, of Neuenberg, with his family by his side, went to be with the Lord after a long battle with cancer, at the palliative care ward at BTHC.

Gerald was the last child born to George and Justina (nee Dyck) Unrau of Neuenberg on July 24, 1966. Being the youngest, he spent a lot of time learning from his parents. He enjoyed cooking and baking with his mom, learning her specialty, pies. He was good at baking pies. He worked alongside his dad doing chores around the farm. When chores were done there was time for friends, swimming in the dugout, or riding around on 3 wheelers. Gerald only had a grade 8 education. But he never let the lack of a diploma hold him back. He was very intelligent and successful. He would never back down, even when discussions got heated. He kept abreast of news and politics and could be depended on for sharing his views. He was baptized upon the confession of his faith in June 1985, in Sommerfeld Church in Winkler. After being pursued by Audrey for several months, they started dating in June 1985. On May 16, 1987 at the EMM Church God united Gerald and Audrey in marriage. They were happily married for 31 years and were blessed with 3 wonderful children. Gerald worked as a Taper for 31 years. Initially he worked alongside his brother Henry for many years. Later forming his own company with Audrey, G&A Unrau Taping, and eventually trained his sons in the taping business. A business and profession his sons have since taken over from their Dad. Gerald was a very dedicated and hard worker, but he also knew how to have fun. Family time was important to Gerald. He loved camping, fishing, gardening and playing games. He would often take time for coffee with family and friends in homes and coffee shops.

Gerald was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in November 2012. He beat this cancer and was clear for 1 ½ years. Cancer unfortunately returned in 2014, this time in his abdominal wall. He endured numerous rounds of chemo, but persevered. He continued working throughout this, supporting his family and training his boys in his trade. It was the love that Gerald had for God that pulled him through his cancer journey. Gerald left a legacy that will last for generations to come. A legacy of hard work, unwavering integrity, and a love for his family. But above all, Gerald had a love for his Heavenly Father. This was obvious in all he did.

Gerald will be sadly missed by his wife Audrey (nee Hiebert), Vanessa (Lyndon) Giesbrecht, Darin (Michelle) Unrau and Colin (Eva) Unrau, as well as seven grandchildren. He is survived by his siblings Bill (Helen) Unrau, Henry (Shirley) Unrau, Martha (Ike) Elias, Ben (Lisa) Unrau, and sister-in-law Mary Unrau. He will also be missed by his father-in-law Peter Hiebert, mother-in-law Anita Nieuwenhuis, sister-in-law Cathy (Bruce) Reid and numerous nieces and nephews.  Gerald was predeceased by his parents George and Justina Unrau, 2-year-old brother Henry, sister and brother –in-law Marina and Nick Peters, brother Ed Unrau and step father-in-law Bert Nieuwenhuis.

Memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday July 12, 2018 at the Winkler EMMC with interment prior to the service at Neuenberg Cemetery.

The family would like to express a big thank you to all the family and friends for their love, prayers and support for Gerald and his family. We would also like to thank the staff and volunteers at BTHC. The family would like to thank all those who sent flowers. We are truly grateful for all the kindness and care shown to us. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Gerald’s memory to the Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation designated to either Palliative Care or Cancer Care.
