Henry Schmidt

1954 – 2018

Henry Schmidt, age 63 of Winkler, MB passed away peacefully and went to be with the Lord on Thursday March 8, 2018 at St. Boniface Hospital with his family by his side.

He was born in Mexico on July 24, 1954 to John and Mary Schmidt. Dad’s passion for automotive repair began at an early age. He enjoyed taking things apart to see how they worked. This passion remained throughout his whole career, ending with opening his own shop, Schmidt’s Auto in Winkler. Dad met mom in Lowe Farm, Mexico. He was baptized in May 1972 and they were married June 25, 1972. They went on to have four boys; Johnny (1972) who passed away in infancy, Ben (1974), John (1976) and Henry (1977). Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer on December 27, 2017. He went on to complete 15 treatments of radiation in January, which helped with his pain. On March 7, the evening of his followup appointment, he was admitted to BTHC due to extreme pain. He was immediately sent to St. Boniface for further tests. During that night, his body took a turn for the worst. He was then placed on life support and the doctors informed us that he would not recover.

He was predeceased by his son, Johnny, his parents, John and Mary, brothers, Jake and Abe, sister, Tina Neufeld, brothers-in-law, Jake Knelsen, Isaac Bergen, niece, Agatha Schmidt and sister-in-law, Helen Bergen.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Mary and their three sons, Ben, John and Jackie and their children, Calysta, Reed and Tiana, Henry and Jennifer and their children, Leah, Tayla, Chase and Brant.

Funeral service at 2:00 p.m. on Monday March 12, 2018 at the Pembina Valley Baptist Church with interment at Westridge Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to thank Kiley and Wiebe Funeral Home, Dr. Woelk and nurse, Karen from BTHC and special nurses, Jolene and Carly at St. Boniface Hospital. Special thanks to Pastor Mike Sullivant for his wonderful friendship and support during this difficult time. As well as Dan Bergen and sister, Anna for all the rides to Winnipeg. Thank you to the church for all your love and support.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Henry’s memory to the Boundary Trails Health Centre Foundation, designated to Cancer Care.
