 Elma Margurite Sawatzky (nee Janzen)

1927 - 2018

On Monday, January 8, 2018 at the Boundary Trails Health Centre, Elma Margurite Sawatzky (nee Janzen), aged 90 years of Morden, went to her eternal rest.

Mom was born September 17, 1927 in Eichenfeld, Manitoba. She attended school in Blumenfeld. After completing grade 9, she worked with her Dad in the family store, where she also managed the postal outlet. Mom was baptized in 1948 in the Morden Bergthaler Church, and married our Dad, Rudy Sawatzky, on July 9, 1950 in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Rita.

Shortly thereafter, they moved to Altona, where Mom worked with Dad in operating a bakery. In 1957, they moved to Morden, eventually settling on a farm southwest of town.

Mom was hardworking, caring for the farm while also working at various jobs, including initially as a sales clerk in the Robinson’s store and later as a receptionist at Janzen Pontiac Buick. She had a passion for numbers and while working as a receptionist, she enrolled in an accounting course in which she excelled. In 1992, Mom and Dad moved to town. After retiring shortly thereafter, Mom spent time tending to her garden, flowers and lawn, enjoying time with family and friends and volunteering at her Church.

Mom had a servant’s heart, giving of herself by volunteering in the women’s group at Church, singing in the double trio, serving as a convener and participating in sewing blankets.

Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were the joy of her life. Her love for her family was shown in all aspects, like cooking all the food for special occasions. We were always well fed. Some of the favorites included cabbage rolls, sage dressing, butterhorns and bubbat.

Mom was a good listener with an open mind and would give good advice. Conversations with Mom were usually long and one would come away enlightened and encouraged. Mom was also a woman of strong faith and committed to prayer and its transforming power. We will miss your prayers, Mom!

Left to cherish her memory are sons Rodney (Betty), Darrell and Harley (Betty) and daughter Mavis (Gilbert), seven grandsons, five great grandsons, four great granddaughters, one brother and one sister.  She is also survived by seven brother-in-laws and five sister-in-laws.

“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”   Isaiah 40:31

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Youth for Christ Morden Inc., 809A Stephen Street, Morden, Manitoba or to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, P.O. Box 767, Winnipeg, Mb R3C 2L4.
