 Velma Eileen Dudgeon (nee Rothenberger)

1929 - 2017

On Monday Nov. 13, 2017 at Riverview Health Centre aged 88 years of Winnipeg went to her everlasting rest.

She leaves to mourn her passing son, Danny, (wife, Donna), granddaughter, Tess, her sisters, Lorraine Dudgeon, and Gladys Klatt, (Arnold), brother, Donnie Rothenberger, (Barb), sister-in-law, Marion Dudgeon, brother-in-law, Dale Dudgeon, (Phyllis) and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by infant daughter, Melodie Joy in 1962 and husband, Ole in 1983, sister, Ruth and husband, Walter, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law, Eileen and Jack Laing, brothers-in-law, Allan and Arthur Dudgeon, nieces, Judy and Jeanie, nephews, Kimmy and David and great niece, Taylor.

Mum was born to Adolph and Elizabeth Rothenberger in 1929 and grew up on the family homestead south of Thornhill, MB where she along with her sisters and brother enjoyed a wholesome, happy farm life. Times were tough in the dirty 30’s with Mum sharing that at Christmas she and her sisters were fortunate to receive one orange and pencil each for presents. My how times changed as Mum showered her only grandchild with presents at Christmas and birthdays. The 1950’s truly were the Fabulous 50’s for Mum! Moving to “the city” with sister, Lorraine and working until they each got married to the Dudgeon brothers; Ole and Art whose farm was just over a mile from where they grew up. The 50’s were a time for weddings and babies; twelve of Mum’s nieces and nephews, (plus Danny of course), were born between 1953 and 1960. Mum returned to work at MTS in the late 1960’s and retired in 1993 having forged many friendships along the way. Mum loved to sing back-up to Dad ”cool, clear water” ”water”. Those impromptu family sing-alongs were always a highlight whenever they were held. Family was the most important thing for Mum throughout her life and her granddaughter, Tess the most cherished.

A memorial to Velma’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday November 20, 2017 at Wiebe Funeral Chapel 1050 Thornhill St. in Morden, MB. Ash interment to follow at the Chapel Cemetery. The family would like to thank all the staff at Riverview Health Centre for their compassionate care these past few months.  A special thank you to cousin, Linda for all your support. You are an angel on earth. Also thanks to cousin, Buddy whose unselfish thoughtfulness and assistance to Mum over the years can’t be overstated.

In lieu of flowers take a friend or family member for lunch or supper. Those memories endure.
