Maria (Mary) Friesen (nee Wiebe)

1923 - 2017

Mary Friesen our mom, grandma, great grandma age 94, from Salem Home went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 12, 2017. She was born on April 21,1923 to Anna and Peter K Wiebe of Hochfeld. She grew up there with many friends. On June 16, 1943, she got baptized. She married the love of her life Jacob U Friesen on October 14,1945, who she met through her older 2 sisters who both married his older 2 brothers. In 1948, they moved to Paraguay with their 6 month old son. This was not cut out to be what they thought so in 6 mo. they moved back. They lived on Kroeker’s farm till they bought their own home in Hochfeld in 1967. There they lived till they retired to Winkler. In Hochfeld mom took care of the household and the chores outside while dad worked long hours. Embroidering, baking, cooking and gardening was her passion there. When they moved to Winkler she loved to have friends over for faspa. After they moved to Crocus Village she would have regular faspas with ladies on her floor and she would bake and bring it to the ones who were unable too. She got such joy out of that. After dad’s passing she kept busy working and shopping at MCC and Walmart. When we cleaned her apartment, the store was there. It was full. As time went on, things became more difficult for her, walking was limited and eventually wheelchair bound. Homecare was arranged and eventually paneled for Salem Home. She loved her prior stay at the Crystal City Hospital where she lived for 9 months. She became very attached to the staff there. Then she moved to Salem Home which was an adjustment but easily latched onto the staff there. She loved Salem and always talked about the wonderful nurses that were taking care of her. She had so many favorite nurses. Christmas was her highlight. She always has liked playing Santa Claus. I had to make sure she would have a Christmas present for each person and with 3 shifts a day that meant I had to have quite a few ready for her and the whole week before Christmas she was handing them out. She lived at Salem for almost 3 years and embroidered tea towels I think every day. Thank you, Salem staff, for the most amazing care you gave to our mom. You were her second family. While she was there she always looked forward to the Wednesday afternoon coffee breaks we had with her. Our parties on Wednesdays was called the Hochfeld ladies faspa. That I will really miss.

Mom leaves to mourn her 3 sons and 1 daughter: Melvin (Ruth), Peter(Susan) and their family, Grace (Don) Toews and their family, Gary (Kelly) and 1 daughter in law, Ruth Hollaran and her family. She was predeceased by her parents, all her siblings, husband, Jacob, son, Ernie Friesen and 2 great grandchildren.

We would like to thank everyone who was involved in mom’s life.  Especially Peter and Margaret Rempel for helping mom with absolutely everything when she was living alone. Thank you to Wiebe Funeral Home for making this planning so easy, Art Wiebe for the pastoral care, ladies serving group, ushers, pallbearers and to all those who showed kindness in food, flowers, cards, phone calls and text messages. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mary’s memory to Salem Foundation Inc.
