Cornelius (Cornie) Dueck

1930 – 2017

Cornelius Dueck “Cornie” was born on February 9, 1930 in the Eiginhoff district south of Altona to Cornelius and Sarah Dueck (nee Braun). He was the 7th child born in a family of 10, 7 sisters and 2 brothers, the eldest brother passing in infancy. He loved farm life and from an early age was already helping out with chores and farming responsibilities.  In 1947 Dad fell ill and was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with Polio at the age of 17. In 1951 Dad became a member of the Sommerfelder Church. He started his career as a successful car salesman from 1959 to 1985 working at Garden City Chrysler, Mid Town Chevrolet, Courtesy Motors, Rhineland Car and Fehr Ford to name a few.  He was good at what he did and received many awards for top sales. He married Mary Peters in 1965, moved to Morden in 1968 and together they raised a daughter and a son. After he retired in 1985 he did Homecare, “sat guard” for the local police and RCMP and took folks into Winnipeg for medical appointments. He enjoyed yard work in summer and snow blowing for the neighbourhood in the winter. He enjoyed a coffee routine with friends everyday where he could still connect with his friends and community.

In 2010 Dad suffered a stroke which affected his left side.  In 2013 when caring for Dad became too heavy for Mom they sold their home of 46 years and moved to Winkler. Shortly after the move Dad was admitted to the hospital and from there was panelled, spending time in Swan Lake Hospital before the final move to Salem PCH in March 2014. As his condition deteriorated over the next 3 years and sadly on May 20, 2017 he succumbed to his ailments and went home to Jesus.

He was predeceased by his parents, a brother in infancy, 6 sisters, youngest brother, 7 brothers-in-law, 1 sister-in-law. Cornie is survived by his wife 51 ½ years, Mary, his daughter, Sheila and husband, Don Bergen of Winkler, Grandsons: Justin (and Camory) Bergen, Connor (and Allison) Bergen and Reagan Bergen, his Son, Ron Dueck of Winnipeg and granddaughter, Madison, Daughter, Sheryl Weiss and husband, Louis of Saskatoon and their family, Sister, Helen (and John) Stoesz of Altona, 4 brothers-in-law, 4 sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces.

Funeral service at 2:30 p.m. on Friday May 26, 2017 at Wiebe Funeral Chapel in Morden.
