 Aganetha (Neta) Martens (nee Guenther)

1912 - 2017

Passed away peacefully in her 105th year. Born August 23/1912 and died April 19, 2017. Predeceased by her husband, Isaac in 1988, son-in-law, Bob Peters in 2003, and daughters Rhoda Peters in 2012 and Dorothy Heinrichs in 2014, and eight siblings. She will be mourned and fondly remembered by her remaining children, Virginia Wilkins, Aneta (Harvey) Betcher, Bob (Wendy) Martens and 2 siblings, Rose Thiessen and Anthony Guenther, 2 sisters-in-law, Mary Banman and Helen Martens also 12 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

“Neta” lived in southern Manitoba most of her life, retiring from the family farm at Manitou in 1976. She and her husband were members of the C&MA church and had an active ministry of hospitality and ongoing support to many missionaries over the years. She was a well qualified farmer’s wife with her love of gardening, flowers, fruits and vegetables, as well as her cooking, canning and baking skills, winning many first place ribbons at the local fair. Her 5 children were trained with a good work ethic and given a sound biblical foundation along with a great example of genuine Christian faith.

After 20 years in Winkler, she moved to Regina to be near Rhoda’s family for 7 years. Following Bob Peters death in 2003, she spent 7 years living with Virginia in Hamilton ON.  In December 2010, she went to BC to spend Christmas with Dorothy and Randy. While there, she had surgery for a broken hip and spent the next 5 1/2 years in Menno Place Care Home in Abbotsford. There she was treated like a member of the family, and received excellent medical, nursing and recreational care. Also the pastoral care under the direction of Ingrid Schultz was exceptional and truly appreciated, especially during her times of bereavement in losing her two daughters as well as the difficult time just before she came back to Hamilton in August for end-of-life care at home with Virginia.

Memorial service at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday April 29, 2017 at Wiebe Funeral Chapel, Morden with interment at 10:30 a.m. prior at Chapel Cemetery.

Special thanks also to the many friends and family, especially Randy in the past two years who regularly came to visit and take her for a walk and a coffee. We thank God for all of you who phoned, sent cards, flowers, gifts and showed so much kindness and love to our dear mother. In lieu of flowers, donations to: Global Advance (C&MA) 30 Carrier Dr. Ste 100, Toronto, ON M9W 5T7 (Memo: Curt/Trish Peters) (or) Menno Home, 32910 Brundige Ave. Abbotsford, BC V2S 1N2 would be appreciated.
