Justina Klassen (nee Fehr)

1921 – 2015

Klassen Justina sqOn Thursday May 7, 2015 at Salem Home in Winkler, MB Justina Klassen aged 94 years formerly of Morden and the Wakeham district, went to her eternal rest.

Justina was born in Schoenwiese on March 7, 1921 to Isaac and Elizabeth Fehr. Her family moved to Hochfeld where she also attended school. She was baptized in 1940 and married Peter H Klassen on November 10, 1940 in the Reinland Sommerfelder Church. Four daughters and four sons were born to this union. Their first home was in the 1-5 area south of Morden where they began farming. Mom was a homemaker who also enjoyed working outdoors in her gardens and in the dairy barn. She loved the farm and liked caring for the young calves. She baked countless batches of homemade buns and each autumn, when 100 lbs of sugar was cooked into plum jam that would be enough for the year. Their home was also often home to a live-in farm worker and a kitchen maid. It was a place that welcomed relative's children for holidays or during family emergencies. In November of 1973, Dad and Mom sold the farm and moved to Morden where they lived together for almost 10 years. Mom was widowed in September of 1983. She could not adjust to being alone, so she took in boarders. Later she moved to another home in Morden and had a suite in the basement which she rented out. Mom was a person who adjusted to hardships and circumstances, doing the best she could with what she was dealt. Mom especially delighted in her grandchildren and they delighted in her. Family was her life and she was devoted to hers. Now that she had more free time, she did a lot of beautiful embroidery, some of which was made into baby quilts for great grandchildren. She learned to appliqué and her tiny precise stitches are preserved in several heirloom quilts owned by her children. She always had a puzzle ready to work on with family, friends or to help pass the time when she was alone. When the home and yard became too much for her to look after, she moved to an apartment in Winkler. Here she enjoyed the fellowship of others and lived there for about 10 years.

In 2013, when living alone became too difficult, Mom spent several months in hospitals until a room was available at Salem Home. Here she has spent about 14 months until God called her to her new home with Him. Thank you to the staff at Salem Home for their compassionate care during mom's stay there. We will miss our Mom, her quietly affirming ways and encouraging words in our visits with her.

She leaves to mourn her passing two daughters, Betty and Bernie Klassen, Agatha and Ernie Wieler, three sons, Henry H and Tina Klassen, Peter and Hilda Klassen, Ike and Martha Klassen and daughter-in-law, Kathie Klassen as well as 16 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter H Klassen in 1983, daughters, Lena in 1949 and Justina in 1957, son, William in 2000 and two grandsons.

Funeral service on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Winkler Sommerfeld Mennonite Church with interment at Hochfeld Cemetery.

Thank you to the staff at Salem Home for their compassionate care during mom’s stay with them.
