1929 – 2015


Jacob HarmsOn Friday, February 27, 2015 at the Victoria General Hospital, Jacob Harms at the age of 85, having lived courageously in life as well as during the final stages of Parkinson's disease passed away peacefully.

He is survived by his dear and loving wife, Marion, daughter, Angelena, sons, Reno, Clinton and his grandchildren, Marissa (Mike), Derek (Allyson), Kyle (Gosha), Trent and his great grandchildren, Madison, Derek Jr. Also mourning his loss are his brother, Peter (Dorothy), sisters, Agatha, Helen, Justine and Margaret (Mike) and Marion’s family, Doreen Enns, Ken (Linda) Wiebe, Ron (Carolyn) Wiebe, Grant Wiebe and Greg Wiebe and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jake was predeceased by his infant son, Jacob Jr., his parents, Abram and Lena Harms, his brothers, Abe Harms and John Harms and sister, Katherine Siemens also his in-laws, William and Katherine Wiebe, nephew, Matthew Wiebe, sister-in-law, Martha Wiebe and brother-in-law, Elmer Enns.

Jake was born on August 23, 1929 in northern Mexico, Chihuahua and returned to Canada where he met and married his wife, Marion in Plum Coulee, Manitoba on September 11, 1955. Later the couple would move to California and settle in Glendora where they raised their three children; years later returning home to Winnipeg. While in California, Jake took great pleasure in the climate and sunshine he loved and throughout his life shared many special times with his family during their regular outings to parks, beaches, mountains and lakes. Jake worked at Hewlett Packard and Bristol Aerospace as a quality control supervisor and formed many lifelong and enduring friendships with both coworkers and neighbors. In his semi-retirement years, Jake founded the first lawn fertilizing company in Manitoba, Home Lawn. Throughout his life; Jake was always there to support and lend a hand. He loved his family, working hard, the outdoors, his motorcycles, being active and especially looked forward to visits with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jake was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. We will remember his smile, warmth, energy, and his love for life, family and friends. He worked very hard all his life and made a difference in the lives of many.

Please join the Harms family in a celebration of Jake’s life. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bergthaler Mennonite Church in Plum Coulee. There will be viewing prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Plum Coulee Cemetery, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Parkinson Society Manitoba.
