Maria (Mary) Plett (nee Falk)

1923 - 2015

plett mary sqMary Plett was born on January 9, 1923 in Arkadak, Ukraine, Russia to Jakob and Elizabeth Falk. At the age of 2½, her family immigrated to Canada and settled in Schoenwiese, Manitoba. Mary was a teacher by vocation, meeting her beloved husband, Edwin Plett at her first teaching assignment. They were married on June 30, 1945 and would have been married 70 years this year! Mary and Ed lived in Rosenort (Rosetown), Winkler and then moved to Homestead South in Morden, where she lived until she was admitted to Boundary Trails Health Center a week ago.

Mary was an avid gardener, winning many prizes at the Winkler Fair for her vegetables and flowers. After moving to Winkler, Mary devoted a lot of her time to volunteering at the Winkler MCC Thrift Store, serving as President and in various other positions on the committee, as well as with sorting clothes for the Thrift Store.  She enjoyed this work as well as her volunteer involvement on the Church Ladies Aid. Mary was very proud of all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved them all very much. She never tired of seeing them and praying for them daily and was always willing to make their favorite foods when they were over to visit. She knit or crocheted mittens, blankets and table runners for all the children and grandchildren and sewed many patchwork blankets and blue jean blankets for them as well. Her creative abilities included sewing many clothes, including wedding dresses for a number of her daughters without any patterns. Each Christmas, every family member and grandchild received a handmade ornament. These ornaments adorn many of our Christmas trees to this day.

Mary went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Saturday, January 24th, 2015 at the age of 92. She was predeceased by two great-grandchildren, Aelyn and Declan Brown; four brothers, Abram, Jacob, Henry and David; four sisters, Margaret, Elizabeth, Anna and Helen. She is survived by her husband, Edwin and children; Joyce (Jim Burnes), Carolynn (Ed Enns), Joan (Leo Kirouac), Robert Plett (Anneliese), Dorothy (Reg Giesbrecht), Lorna (John Junker-Andersen) and Kathy (Peter Bergen) along with 23 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren and one sister, Tina Janzen; two sisters-in-law, Helena Falk, Anna Falk and one brother-in-law, Cornie Thiessen.

The Family wants to express their sincere appreciation to all the staff at Homestead South in Morden, Mary Benson and all the Homecare Nurses and Staff; the staff at Boundary Trails Health Center, Dr. Blignaut, Dr. Woelk and the Palliative Care staff and Dr. Zacharias. Also a special thank you to Dr. Stockl and team at the Misericordia Eye Clinic who worked so hard to help Mary maintain her eyesight.

Memorial service on Wednesday, January 28th, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church. Private family interment prior at the Winkler Cemetery. Donations may be made in Mary’s memory to MCC. Our Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother will be greatly missed but we are happy that she is now pain free and with her Lord and Saviour in Heaven.
