Susanne Bergen (nee Janzen)

1940 - 2015

Bergen Susanne sqSusie Bergen, aged 74 years of Morden, MB formerly of Portage La Prairie passed away peacefully on Friday, January 16, 2015 at Boundary Trails Health Centre.

She was born on June 14, 1940 in Altona, MB to Jacob F. and Lena Janzen.  She was baptized on May 25, 1958 at 18 years of age by elder John Friesen in Bergfeld EMMC church.

She married Alvin Bergen on October 5, 1958.  They lived in Dominion City then moved south of Plum Coulee. They then moved to Oakland, then to Bagot, Portage la Prairie and finally in 1993 to Morden.

She volunteered as a Pink Lady in the Portage General Hospital for several years while they lived in Oakland.  She cleaned houses and later worked in the homecare field.  She loved to crochet and sew and baked the most amazing buns.  She worked hard on the farm and loved visiting and helping out her friends and neighbors when they were in need.  When they moved to Morden, she and some of her friends started a sewing group called the “Humble Bees” and they sewed blankets and layettes for children at Midway Bible Camp.  She and Alvin and a group of their friends went up north every spring for many years to help out at the camp.  Her Humble Bees sewed together for 13 years and made about 2000 blankets and 700 layettes!

Alvin and Susie spent many wonderful years traveling together throughout Canada, the US, and Mexico; to Arizona for the winters and fishing and camping with family. She was admitted to hospital on June 24th where she remained until October 30th.  Then she was transferred to the St. Claude Care Home awaiting a room in Tabor Home.  On January 5th, she was taken to Boundary Trails where she was cared for until her death.

She leaves to mourn her husband of 56 years, Alvin and three children, Jim (Betty) and their children Calvin and Charlene (Natalya and Ramsin), Amanda and Butch Pries (Leighton, Logan, Corbin, Chaz), Jenna and Mike Menard; Doreen (Neil) Driedger and their children, Eric and Claire (Caitlyn), Darcy and Vanessa (Grace, Hazel, Nate), Nick and Kayla (Kinsley), Candice and Jordan Kemper (Malachi); Andy (Theresa) and their children, Michael and Rebekah (Canaan), Mark and Terra, Matthew. Also left behind are a brother, Jake (Jennie) Janzen and a sister, Helen (Henry) Thiessen.  She wrote in her diary the following:  “I have 1 sister, Helen, 12 years older. She was a good sister. When she got married she made me a white dress with lace trim, white stockings and white shoes.  She always did my hair for Sunday in ringlets.  I was 8 years old when she married.  I have 1 brother, Jake, 10 years older.  He was a quiet one and helped dad on the farm.  He said he sometimes had to babysit me.  When he married I was 13 years old.  I drove him and his bride to their wedding.  I was sure proud of myself, driving car at 13!” Also brothers and sisters-in-law, Bernie and Marge Bergen, Leona and John Enns, Art and Anne Bergen, Marvin and Helen Bergen and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Monday January 19, 2015 at the Morden EMMC with interment prior at the Rudnerweide Cemetery. The family would like to thank all the staff and doctors at Boundary Trails Health Centre and St. Claude Care Home who cared for Susie over the years. She was a loving wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma, aunt and friend. Donations in Susie's memory may be made to Midway Bible Camp.
