Funk, Johan

Johan Funk

1924 - 2014

It has been the will of the Lord to take from us  through natural death, our father, grandfather and great grandfather, Johan Funk.

He was born on January 31, 1929 in Mexico.  His parents were Johan and Katharina Funk.  His mother's maiden name was Schmidt.

Upon confession of his faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour, he was baptized on May 21, 1950 in Mexico.

He was married to Agatha Friesen on October 29, 1950.  To them were born 10 children:  7 sons and 3 daughters.  1 daughter predeceased him.  His wife passed away on October 19, 2012.  They had shared joys and sorrows for 61 years, 11 months and 20 days.  He was a widower for 1 year, 10 months and 1 day.

Johan grew up in Mexico, in the Cuauhtemoc area, in the "Swift Colony" where he received his schooling, and also got married.  In 2002 they moved to Canada, to Winkler, Manitoba, where he still lived, the last few years at Salem Home.  In Mexico, he was a part time farmer, and part time buying machinery in the United States, and selling it in Mexico.  In Canada, he also had some part time jobs, at Kroeker Farms, Monarch Industries and at Fehrs in Rosenort, till his retirement.

He enjoyed good health for most of his life.  He was diagnosed with having dementia in 2000, which causes a loss of memory.  His memory loss increased over time, and in 2010 he was admitted into the hospital.  After discharge from the hospital, he and his wife lived with their children, the Peters in Reinfeld.  He soon had to be readmitted to the hospital, and in November, 2010 he was transferred to Salem Home, where he resided till his death.  On July 13, 2014 he broke his hip.  They operated on his hip, but to no avail, as his condition continued to deteriorate.  The last 5 days, he was very sick and he passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at about 5 pm in the afternoon.

Johan reached the age of 85 years, 6 months and 20 days.  He is survived by 7 sons, 2 daughters, 3 sons-in-law, 6 daughters-in-law, 68 grandchildren, 75 great grandchildren, 3 sisters, and friends and relatives that mourn his departure.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Agatha, 1 daughter, 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

We sorrow, but not as such who have no hope, but we believe that he, through God's grace and mercy, will have received that eternal home, prepared for all believers.

Sincerely,

Katharina Peters
