John Wolfe

1933 – 2014

John Wolfe sqOn Monday, March 3, 2014 at 2:08 in the morning, John Wolfe, aged 80 years passed away peacefully at Boundary Trails Health Centre.

John was born on March 13, 1933 to Peter and Katherine Wolfe (nee Heide) in Chortitz, MB.  He grew up and had his schooling in Chortitz. He met the love of his life, Elizabeth Hildebrand and they were married on July 29, 1956 in the Old Colony Church in Chortitz.  They lived in Chortitz for a short while, then moved to the Blumenstein area where they had their family.  In the winter of 1973, they moved to the town of Winkler.  In the fall of 2013, they moved to the Garden Park Estates. John had several jobs in his lifetime such as working in a Lumber camp, working for Kroeker’s, for B.B. Wiebe Movers and for Friesen & Wiebe Construction.  He was also a bricklayer for many years and helped build many places in town.  His last place of employment before retirement was Grandeur Housing. Dad did a lot of walking and biking after he retired.  He would get up in the mornings at 6:00 am and walk three miles.  When he got home he would read his Bible.  Dad loved to read. Dad loved to go up town and shop for bargains.  He loved to garage sale and go to auction sales.  He also loved to shop for reading material at the MCC Store.  He would take care of the yard work and do renovations on the house. Dad accepted Jesus Christ as His Lord and Savior on April 18, 1996 through Pastor Mike Sullivant.  This was a life-changing time for dad and he took it very seriously.  He and mom were baptized upon the confession of their faith at the Pembina Valley Baptist Church on November 11, 2007.  Dad had a strong testimony as he witnessed to others. Dad had a heart attack on August 30, 2010.  He had a second mild heart attack on November 26, 2012. In fall of 2013 Dad was diagnosed with brain cancer.  He declined rapidly over the next months. He was in the hospital for 40 days then we were privileged to take care of him at home for three months.  We became very close to one another.  He spent the last two weeks of his life in the hospital when he grew too ill to be at home.

He is survived by his beloved wife Elizabeth (nee Hildebrand), three daughters, Helen and Stan Wall of Winkler, Kathy and Peter Kornelson of Winkler, Rose and Corey Friesen of Morden, four sons, Frank and Wanda of Winkler, John of Calgary, Dan and Kim of Morden and Leonard and Michelle of Altona.  He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.  He was predeceased by his parents, parents-in-law, one sister, four brothers and three brothers-in-law.

A verse Dad took comfort in:  John 14:2&3 – “In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”

Funeral service was held at Pembina Valley Baptist Church at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 7, 2014 with interment at Westridge Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to express their appreciation for all the visits and prayers, food and flowers.  A special thank-you to the Palliative Care for making dad’s stay at home possible.

To our dear friends in the Wolfe family,
Our prayers are with you at this time and we wish we could be there with you during your sorrow. PTL that we do not sorrow without hope and that separation is temporary.
John was a blessing and an encouragement to us. He always had a smile and warm handshake to greet and encourage others. What a great heritage he now leaves through God's great grace!
