Hamm, Jacob K

Jacob “Jake K” Hamm

1935 - 2013

Jake Hamm sqJake was born on December 30th, 1935 in Friedensruh, Manitoba.  He was the youngest of eight children born to Abram and Sarah Hamm.  Jake was baptized upon confession of his faith in 1959 in the Old Colony Church in Chortitz. He met Verna Krahn, the love of his life, in 1957 and they were married in September of 1961. They were blessed with three children, two sons and a daughter. In 1983 their first born son Randy died of cancer.  Jake could not accept this at first, but with time and by the grace of God he was able to. Then in 2011 their second son Larry also went to be with Jesus, after suffering for many years with a number of illnesses.  Jake accepted Larry’s passing with less difficulty, knowing that Larry was in a better place and that he had been released from his suffering. Their only daughter Sandra married Jamie Bound in 1999. They have two children, Haley and Dryden, whom Jake loved very much. Jake and Verna worked a small farm for over forty years.  He also worked seasonally for Kroeker Farms hauling potatoes and at the beet loader in Winkler.  Jake’s health was fairly good, except for a severe struggle with asthma in his 20's and 30’s, which was eventually brought under control so he could keep on farming. After forty-one years on the farm, Jake and Verna retired and moved to Winkler. Jake was really enjoying his retirement until the morning of February 15, 2007. That's when Jake suffered a stroke. This left him disabled in many ways.  Verna would go on caring for him in their home for the next three years.  After progressively getting worse, Jake went to live at Salem Home in Winkler in May of 2010.  Knowing that their son Larry was already living there made this adjustment less difficult for Jake. After Larry's passing Verna began taking Jake home for his supper meals. He loved   to sit in the garage, with the garage door open whenever possible, and watch the neighborhood traffic.  They would go on doing this on a daily basis for the next two years. Three weeks ago, Jake suddenly became very weak and the rest of his days were spent in bed.  Jake’s wish was to go to heaven and be with his boys.  On June 4th   his wife Verna was by his side and she told him to go be with the boys in heaven and she would look after Sandra and her family.  At 8:15 p.m. Jake passed away peacefully.

Jake leaves to mourn his wife Verna, daughter Sandra, her husband Jamie and their children Haley and Dryden.  His passing will also be mourned by Verna’s sisters Lilly and Frieda and their families, two sisters-in-law, Helen Hamm and Mary Hamm, many nieces, nephews and friends. Jake was predeceased by two sons, his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday June 8, 2013 at Winkler Sommerfeld Mennonite Church with interment at Westridge Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to extend special thanks to: Rev. Art Wiebe, Rev. David Friesen, the staff at Salem Home, Wiebe Funeral Homes Ltd. as well as everyone else for the food, flowers, visits, calls and prayers. If friends so desire, donations may be mad in Jake’s memory to the Salem Foundation Inc. The Family
