Hamm, Justina

Justina Hamm (nee Unrau)

1923 - 2012

Justina_Ham_sqAfter a short time of illness, Justina Hamm, with family at her side, peacefully went to her eternal rest on Monday November 19, 2012 at Boundary Trails Health Centre. She was born to William P. and Justina (Olfert) Unrau on October 20, 1923 and grew up in the village of Neuenburg. She was baptized upon confession of her faith and joined the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church. On October 29, 1944 she married Jacob J. Hamm, settled in Winkler, and then later transferred her church membership to the Reinland Mennonite Church.  Dad passed away October 23, 1985.

Mom and Dad had many friends, and enjoyed numerous trips around Canada and the USA. After Dad passed away, Mom and her sister spent some time in MCC volunteer work in Pennyslvania. These were experiences that she treasured. Mom worked hard at raising her family, and also worked at the local Cannery during the harvest seasons, and later in the kitchen at Salem Home. In the early 1980's, Mom and her sister, Mary Peters, were instrumental in starting up a meal program which today has become the Winkler and District Senior Centre. Up until the last days, Mom worked with commitment at the Centre several days every week, making biscuit dough, baking pies, making noodles, and washing dishes. She worked her regular clerking duties at the local MCC thrift store and also enjoyed spending time with friends working on jigsaw puzzles and playing table games.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Jake and one grandson Russell. She is survived by three daughters and five sons; Harold (Helen), Bert (Doris), Hilda (Abe Froese), Rick (Frieda), Ron (Trina), Peggy (John Doyle), Bob (Sandi), Lori (Mark Petryk), 24 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren; as well as two special nieces Ruth (Ike Hiebert), Betty (Dave Bergen *son Jeff deceased*) and their families. She was predeceased by five brothers, two sisters, seven brothers-in-law, nine sisters-in-law; and survived by one brother, one sister, three brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.

Mom was independent to her last day, driving her own car, doing all her own banking and housework, but this fall she actually hired a housekeeper to clean and polish the floors in her apartment. She will be dearly missed by family and many friends.

Funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday November 23, 2012 at the Reinland Mennonite Church with interment at the Winkler Cemetery.

As a family we would like to thank the staff at Boundary Trails Health Centre and the Reinland Mennonite Church community.

We love you Mom, Grandma, Great-grandma and we will see you again!

Dear John & Peggy, so sorry to hear about Mom's passing. It was so neat to get to know her as she visited your place in Yellowknife. Please know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hilda & Abe,
We were saddened to hear of the passing of Mother Hamm but are encouraged to know that she is gone to be with the Lord she loved and served. Your family basically adopted us while we lived in Winkler and we came to love and appreciate your Mom. She baked Dom his first choke cherry pie and had us in for coffee, pie, and ice cream.
We are holding you close in our prayers and trust that the love of God will sustain and the kindness of friends will comfort you during this time of bereavement.

My heart goes out to the Family of Justina Hamm. Justina was a good friend to me, I got to know her at the Winkler Senior Centre, First working with her in the kitchen, she taught me many things and she cleaned up after me many times, always reminding me as she did. I appreciate the contribution she made to the Senior Centre and her faithfulness. I could always count on her. Thank you Justina, I feel blessed that I got to be part of your life. God bless you and my prayers are with you and your family.
