Phillips, Barbara

Barbara Ann Phillips (nee Rach)

1945 - 2012

Barb_Phillips_SqOn Tuesday August 21, 2012 at Boundary Trails Health Centre, Barbara Phillips, aged 67 years of Roland, MB went to her eternal rest.

It’s hard for us to believe that Barbara is gone, but we are so grateful for the time that we had with her. We have many fond memories of Barbara and as we talked about them, we realized how many there were and how many lives she touched. She was a very giving person who expected nothing in return and had the kindest heart. Barbara had a great passion for cooking and all of those around her benefitted from this quality. She would spend countless hours in the kitchen and always had a cookbook within arm’s reach—no matter which room of the house she was in! Barbara was always willing to bake or cook for others including church and community events. However, the main benefactors of her cooking were her immediate family—especially her grandsons Ryan and Derek. They considered granny to be their “personal chef” and were never without their favorite cookies, jams, and favorite foods. Barbara’s freezers, fridges and pantry were always full. With Barbara’s passion for cooking, came a love for entertaining. Her favorite occasion of the year to entertain was Christmas. She would start planning and baking long before the Christmas season and had endless goodies to share with others. Barbara was very particular about both the taste and presentation of her meals.   The tables and food were always festively decorated as well as delicious. Another one of Barbara’s notable qualities was her green thumb. She would spend many hours in the garden and took great pride in her flower gardens. She especially loved the gladiolas and lilies. As autumn neared, Barbara harvested the produce from her gardens and made many preserves for all. Barbara also loved to spend time at our cabin cooking, baking and sharing her garden goodies. She took it upon herself to ensure that everyone enjoyed their stay. Barbara worked as a hair-stylist for close to 50 years. She loved her profession and took great pride in each cut, curl, set and perm. Throughout that time, she made many close friends. Over the years, Barbara took part in numerous community organizations and was always willing to be a provider with her tasty goodies. Barbara was a most caring and loving person to us all. She will never be forgotten and her memories will always live on with us.

She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Doug Phillips, daughter, Kim and Mike Wiebe of Morden, two grandchildren, Ryan and Derek, her mother, Ruth Rach (nee Dreger) of Morden, two brothers, Russ and Nancy Rach of the 1-6 district, Gerald and Debbie Rach of Morden, one sister, Joyce and Vic Fehr of Morden and brother-in-law, Blake Phillips of Carman.

She was predeceased by her father, Herbert Rach and her brother, Howie Rach.

Private graveside service was held on Friday August 24, 2012 at Fairview Cemetery with a memorial reception at the Roland Hall.

Kim (& Family) - so sorry to hear about Barb. I haven't seen either of you in ages, but I remember her beautiful smile and the way she had of making me feel so at home, especially in the salon chair. :) I know you'll miss her greatly. 67 is just far too young to lose someone, especially someone as special as your mom. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

Barb, my hairdresser!
Not only was she a hairdresser, she was a gardener, a cook and a therapist.
Sat. 8 a.m. appointment, we had Double Images to ourselves. We talked, we laughed, discussed the latest issues, what the Grandkids were up to, what Doug was up to or Terry's latest singing gigs, just to name a few. Last time I talked to Barb, she had called to say that, she wouldn't be able to keep my next appointment, that someone else would have to cut my hair. "Why" I said " are you finally retiring?" "Oh no" she replied " Just some appointments I have to keep. I will be back as soon as I can, maybe September."
Barb, you are a ray of sunshine that we will truly miss!
