Margaret Unrau (nee Nickel)

1914 – 2013

Unrau_Margaet_sqOn January 21, 2013, Margaret Unrau aged 98 years passed away peacefully at Salem Home. 

Mom is survived by eleven children; five daughters, Annie (Abram) Hiebert of Winnipeg., Helen (Cornie) Penner of MacGregor, Marge (John) Letkeman of Morden, Tina (Henry) Froese of Winnipeg and Mary (Jerry) Dyck of Altona, six sons, Peter (Lena) Unrau of Carman, John (Shirley) Unrau of Stonewall, Abe (Mary) Unrau of Winkler, Bill (Nettie) Unrau of Morden, Neil (Connie) Unrau of Morden and Jake (Judy) Unrau of Winkler, 33 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren, 17 great great grandchildren, two sisters and one brother.

Mom was predeceased by her husband, Peter Unrau, daughter-in-law, Katy Unrau, her parents, two sisters and three brothers. 

Mom was born in the Lowe Farm area to John and Anna (nee Harder) Nickel on September 18, 1914.  On July 20, 1933 she married Peter Unrau.  They were married 62 ½ years until Dad passed away in 1995. Mom and Dad lived in various places until 1950 when they bought a small acreage in Chortitz.  They moved to Winkler in 1978.  After Dad passed away, Mom moved into Lions Manor until she was admitted to Salem Home in 2007.  Mom was a loving and devoted Mother and will be sadly missed by her family. 

Funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday January 23, 2013 at Winkler Sommerfeld Mennonite Church with interment at Rosenbach Cemetery. 

The family thanks Salem Home staff for giving Mom such great care and compassion, friends and family, as well Rev. David Friesen and Rev Art Wiebe for all of  their support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Salem Home Foundation 165 15th St. Winkler, MB R6W 1T8.
