Cornelius Friesen

1932 - 2011

friesen_cornelius_sqCornie Friesen, beloved father and grandfather passed away on Sunday May 15, 2011 at Boundary Trails Health Centre at 7:15 p.m. He reached the age of 78 years.

He was born and raised in Blumenstein. He enjoyed life on the farm with his family. At the age of 18, he worked for Stuart Johnson on the farm in Mowbray. In 1955, he moved to Winnipeg and worked for Canada Wire for 5 and a half years.

January 1, 1958, he was baptized upon confession of faith at Bethel Mennonite Curch by Rev. George Groening. Cornie married Katie (nee Braun) on July 29, 1961. Together they enjoyed 26 years of marriage in Winnipeg. They were blessed with three daughters.

In the 1960’s, dad was employed by E.H. Price. During this time, he pursued a barbering course but did not finish due to mom’s illness. So he went back to E.H. Price and stayed for 28 years. Shortly after retirement in the summer of 1992, he moved back to Winkler and volunteered at MCC. He loved walking and biking around town and enjoyed many music events and family gatherings.

Dad had many struggles with his health. The last year was particularly difficult needing to use oxygen because his lungs were weak. But dad’s faith in the Lord never wavered; he prayed faithfully for his family and longed to go home. We rejoice with dad as we know he is in heaven where he longed to be. This prayer was found in dad’s Bible: Psalm 131 “Lord, I have given up my pride and turned away from my arrogance. I am not concerned with great matters or with subjects too difficult for me. Instead I am content and at peace. As a child lies quietly in his mother’s arms, so my heart is quiet within me. Israel, trust in the Lord now and forever.”

He leaves to mourn his passing his three loving daughters and their families; Lillian Ruth and husband, Randy Reimer of Winkler, Sarah Lorraine and husband, Randy Bartel of Winnipeg and Helen Elaine and husband, Richard Kinsman of Morden; six grandchildren, John, Matthew, Aaron, Paul, Hannah and Kaitlyn. He is survived by three sisters, Anne Worms, Helen and John Penner and Susan and Ed Warkentin as well as four brothers, Abe and Carol, Will and Irmgardt, George, Henry and Dell; two sisters-in-law, Anne Friesen, Pauline and Bert Goertzen and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Katie Friesen (nee Braun) on June 1, 1988, his parents, Peter P and Helena Friesen and 3 brothers, John, Peter and Jake.

Funeral service was held on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church with interment at Winkler Cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Cornie’s memory to either the Mennonite Central Committee 134 Plaza Dr. Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9 or Cancer Care Manitoba 675 McDermot Ave. Room ON109 Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
