MartensCJRev.jpgIt has pleased the Lord God of Heaven and earth to call Cornelius Martens, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, Pastor, brother and friend to his eternal rest on Monday, May 10, 2010 at about 9AM.

Cornie was born on November 29, 1932 to Jacob and Maria (nee Nickel) Martens at Streun, SK. At the age of 15, he moved to Manitoba with his parents and they settled in the Wiedenfeld district. In 1953, he was baptized upon his confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as his Saviour by the late Bishop Peter Friesen of the Sommerfelder Church. In 1955 on April 24, he entered holy matrimony with Mary Giesbrecht of Bergfeld, near Plum Coulee, MB. They shared joys and sorrows for 55 years and 15 days. This union was blessed with 8 children, 3 sons and 5 daughters:

Gordon and Maria Martens of Grunthal,  MB Helen and Laurence Voodre of Brandon, MB

Betty and Dave Driedger of Gretna, MB  Bill and Karen Martens of McGregor, MB

Martha and Harv Wieler of Austin, MB  Mary and Darryl Wiebe of Rosenfeld, MB

Margaret and Maurice Bernardin of Altona, MB

as well as 25 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 2 sisters and 1 brother and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, son, Edward in 1984 and 1 grandchild in infancy.

Cornie served as songleader in the Reinland Church in Altona and later at the Rainy River Church for a total of 21 years. In 1982, he was elected to the ministry at Rainy River and ordained in September of 1985. He has served in this capacity as long as his health allowed. In 1993, they sold their farm at Rainy River and moved to Grunthal to be close to their children. In 1994, Cornie underwent a serious surgery in which they removed a kidney together with a cancerous tumor. After this, he regained his health and was able to enjoy farming and travelling, including many trips to Alberta to encourage and fellowship with the group that eventually became the Reinlander Church of southern Alberta. In 2007, he was again diagnosed with cancer on the remaining kidney. He has been in and out of the hospital several times until last Monday when God released him from his pain and suffering.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the nurses and doctors at BTHC palliative care for their wonderful care of Cornie during his stay. Thank you also to all the relatives and friends for the many prayers and visits while he was ill.

Funeral service was held Friday May 14, 2010 at 1:00 pm at Winkler Reinland Mennonite Church with interment at the Schoenthal Cemetery.
