Bernhard A. "Ben" Kehler

1911 - 2010

Kehler SQ.jpgBernhard A. (Ben) Kehler was born on November 21, 1911 in Kronsthal, MB to parents Abram and Katrina Kehler (nee Neufeld). He was the 6th of 11 children. Dad grew up and worked on the family farm. He met Anne Peters the love of his life, at a village youth games night. Dad was baptized on June 11, 1935 by Bishop Peter A. Toews. Mom and Dad got married in Kronsgart, south of Plum Coulee, on the Peters family farm on September 29, 1935. He then continued to work on the family farm until 1945. Mom and Dad were blessed with 3 children: Mary, Leonard and Esther.

In 1945 Mom and Dad acquired 40 acres and built a new house and barn in the Kronsthal district, which Dad built by himself. In 1947, Dad began a career as a heavy equipment operator; first, for the R.M. of Rhineland as a caterpillar operator. Then in 1952, he started working in Horndean for Neufeld Bros. Construction. In 1954, he started working for Paul Braun Construction. Dad moved the family to Steinbach in 1957 to work for Brandt Construction. He worked for various construction companies until they moved to Winkler in 1969 to work for the Town of Winkler operating the grader until retirement. They lived in their own home until Dad moved to Salem Home in April of 2008 and Mom joined him in December of the same year. Dad found those seven months of separation from Mom the most difficult in his life. He mentioned many times that if only she could be with him that would be all that he needed.

We noticed that Dad's health and zest for living really deteriorated this last winter. On Thursday May 6, 2010, peacefully, with Mom by his side he passed into his eternal home, at the age of 98 yrs. 5 months and 15 days. Dad had long awaited his eternal rest.

Dad was predeceased by his parents, 2 sisters and 7 brothers. He is survived by his beloved wife, Anne, Mary and husband Ernie Braun, Leonard and wife Nettie, Esther and husband Jake Dyck, 8 grandchildren: Charlotte and Harry, Calvin and Kathy, Colleen and friend Kelly, Steve and Roxanne, Wenona and Philip, Rachel and Chad, Janelle and Farrell, Jaime and Joe, 10 great grandchildren: Angela and friend Eric, Tanya and Chris, Malaurie, Boone, Callie, Koen, Hannah, Gracie, Olivia, Myla and 3 great great grandchildren, Messina, Jaide and Brady. Dad is also survived by his sister Mary Grant of Winnipeg, 2 sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Tuesday May 11, 2010 at Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church with interment prior to the service at the Winkler Cemetery.
