Henry G. Ens

1925 - 2010

Henry g.jpgHenry G. Ens was born in Reinland, Manitoba on May 8, 1925, the third child of Gerhard and Helena Ens, a scant two years after their arrival from Gnadenthal, Ukraine. After Henry eight more brothers and sisters came along, and so his early years were filled with all the bustling work and play of a large farm family. As a young child, Henry had two experiences that profoundly shaped the rest of his life: the inspiration to become a teacher, and the decision to be a true follower of Jesus Christ. His faith was fundamental to all his life choices, big and small, and remained a source of strength and grace throughout.

Henry was baptized in 1947 in the Blumenorter Mennonitengemeinde, and in 1949 he was married to Sara Zacharias, also of Reinland. The homes they created – in Bergfeld, Gnadenthal, Gretna, Witmarsum (Brazil), Cuauhtémoc (Mexico), back in Reinland, and finally Winkler – were inextricably linked with Henry’s teaching career and his activities as a choral conductor, both of which he pursued with joy and vigour right up to his retirement.

All his life, Henry was known for his enthusiastic curiosity about and interest in the natural world, Mennonite and other history, classical music, photography, languages, travel, literature, art, technological advances, and — not least — for his sense of humour. He was delighted by his and Sara’s children and grandchildren, at each of their births pronouncing them the "cutest little baby in the world."

Approximately three years ago, Henry became seriously ill. After a lengthy hospital stay, he spent his last two years in Salem Home, where he received the kindest, most attentive care one could wish for. We are deeply grateful to the staff there. He died peacefully on Friday, September 10, 2010.

Henry was predeceased by his parents, Gerhard and Helena Ens, brother Frank, sister Margaret Penner, brother Ernie and sister-in-law Jean.

His memory is held dear by his wife Sara; children Annele and Michael Robertson, Heidi and John Harms, Erica, and Ernest; grandchildren Paul and Arda and Sara Harms, Andrew and Adrianna Robertson; great grandchildren Lily Tamara and Wilfred John Henry Harms; siblings and in-laws Gerhard and Anni Ens, Betty Ens, Bill Penner, Helen Ens, Abe and Helen Ens, Adolf and Anna Ens, MaryAnne and Frank Zacharias, Werner and Marlene Ens, and Armin and Caroline Ens and their families; as well as his huge extended families and countless friends. Ruhe sanft.

Memorial service was held on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at the Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church. Interment was prior to the service at Reinland Cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Henry’s memory to either the Mennonite Disaster Service or Salem Foundation Inc.
