Jean Dorothy Dyck (nee Enns)

1927 – 2010

dyck dorothy.jpgOn Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at Boundary Trails Hospital, Jean Dorothy Dyck aged 82 years of Winkler, MB went to her eternal rest.

Dorothy was born to Jacob and Justina Enns on August 4, 1927, a sister to Annie and later to Elinor. She grew up in Green Farm, northeast of Winkler and at the age of 22 married Bill Dyck of Plum Coulee.

Bill and Dorothy raised 2 boys, Bradley and Glenn in Plum Coulee. They attended the Bergthaler Church where Mom enjoyed activities in the Ladies Sewing Circle. When the boys were of high school age, the family moved to Winkler and transferred their membership to the Winkler Bergthaler Church. Mom worked for some years at Salem Home in housekeeping and later at the Co-op Cafeteria.

Due to a severe case of rheumatic fever as a child, mom suffered heart damage that became apparent in her later years. She was often tired so she and Dad tackled household jobs together. Finally, in 1993 Mom had heart surgery and her quality of life improved.

Mom liked to knit, watch curling and baseball on television, and do word searches. She had a large collection of Blue Mountain ornaments that she gradually passed along to family members in recent years. She and Dad also collected ornamental teapots that she liked to display in her kitchen. Mom grew the best tomatoes in her garden, taught us how to make pickled beets because we enjoyed them so much, and treated us with her homemade jellyrolls at special occasions.

Soon after Dad passed away, Mom moved to Lions Manor where she enjoyed the wonderful meals served there and at the Senior Centre. She liked to visit with the other residents and work on puzzles, play games or go for coffee.

Mom was hospitalized on February 17th after suffering a stroke. Though her condition improved somewhat, we knew she would not be able to return to her home at the Manor. While she was still in Rehab at Boundary Trails Health Centre, she had another stroke from which she did not recover.

Mom leaves to mourn her passing 2 sons, Brad (Marilyn, Katelyn and fiancé, Eric Berg) and Glenn (Dianna, Ty and Zane), 2 sisters, Annie (Jake Derksen) and Elinor Peters, 1 sister-in-law, Lillian Hruda, 1 brother-in-law, Bert Dyck and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service for Jean Dorothy Dyck was held on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the Emmanuel Mennonite Church at 3:00 p.m. with Pastors Menno Janzen and John Wiebe officiating. Interment followed at the Winkler Cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Dorothy’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation Suite 200, 6 Donald Street Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.
