Frank Zacharias

1930 - 2010

Zacharias Frank SQ.jpgFrank was born in the village of Reinland, Manitoba, on October 13th, 1930 to Reverend Peter S. and Aganetha (nee Penner) Zacharias. Frank received his public school education, Grades 1 - 10, in the village of Reinland and then after three years on the farm, completed his Grade 11 and 12 at the MCI . He graduated in 1952. Frank was baptized in his late teens by Bishop Wilhelm Falk and became a member of the Reinland Rudnerweide Gemeinde, later EMMC. He married his village friend, Mary Anne Ens, in 1957. He was the stabilizer in her life and she provided the excitement, but he always allowed her to be who she was.

After completing his teaching certification, Frank taught at several rural schools and at Garden Valley Collegiate. From there he and Mary Anne moved to South America where they taught at the secondary school in Loma Plata (Paraguay), then Blue Creek (Belize), at Mennonite Collegiate Institute, (Gretna), Aylmer Bible School (Ontario) and Steinreich Bible School (Mexico). In all of these places strong friendships and wonderful memories were made that are still part of the family today. At the same time of his teaching years in Manitoba, Frank was actively involved with the EMMC conference in various capacities as well as on the MCC Canada board.

Frank was diagnosed with dementia in 2005 and it affected him disproportionately in his speech and comprehension, his reading and writing. On November 4th, he contracted pneumonia and his condition deteriorated so that on November 20th, at 7:25 a.m. he drew his last breath.

We thank the staff at Evergreen and Chaplain David Friesen for their love, care and patience. Thank you also to Drs. Howard Zacharias and Margie Hesom for being there for MaryAnne whenever she needed counselling or advice, professionally or as a friend.

Frank leaves behind his wife of 52 years, MaryAnne, two sons, Carl and Esther and Walter and Wanda and one daughter Louise and Chris Friesen, and 11 grandchildren. He instilled in all of them his love for God and His calling, the love for order and propriety, music, art, sports, ethics, servitude, and sensitivity and respect towards those less fortunate. Surviving him are four sisters, Mary Janzen, Sara Ens, Helen (and Abe) Ens, and Jessie Zacharias, and two brothers, Peter (and Ella) Zacharias and Ed (and Susan) Zacharias.

Frank was predeceased by his parents, Rev. Peter S. and Aganetha Zacharias, brother, Jake S. and wife, Mary Zacharias, sisters, Nettie, Susanna, Annie and brother, Bernie as well as brothers-in-law, Henry Janzen and Henry G. Ens.

Funeral service was held on Tuesday November 23, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at Winkler EMM church with interment prior at Reinland Cemetery. We praise God for a wonderful husband, father and Opa. He is at peace now. Hallelujah!
