Alfred David Sawatzky

1931 – 2010

SawatzkyAl.jpgAlfred David Sawatzky, age 78, took the "exit ramp" to his eternal home Wednesday, May 12, 2010. He entered this world November 23, 1931 to parents David R. Sawatzky and Maria R. Sawatzky (nee Klaassen) in Stanley Municipality and has travelled many highways and byways during his time here on earth.

Alfred grew up in and around Morden where he attended Maple Leaf and Shannon Schools. He spent his life working and farming in the area but was probably most well know as a school bus driver. He loved to make music and family was especially important to him, children and grandchildren as well as siblings.

Faith was Alfred’s reason for living and it started very early and he grew up loving God and cementing that personal relationship with God in his teen years. It dictated his life and actions, thinking and decisions for his whole life, though he’d easily admit he didn’t always make the right choices. He was baptized on his confession of faith by Bishop Schultz in the Morden Bergthaler Church (now Morden Mennonite) June 5, 1949 where he became a member and later became an active member of the Morden Alliance Church. His faith continued to grow and he trusted God with his family and the spiritual lessons became especially interesting as he got older. He prayed his entire life for God’s will to be done and accepted what came his way as out of God’s hand.

Most people knew Alfred for his laughter. He spiced up many a life with a bit of wit and a good joke! His whole life he loved to laugh – and he loved to help others laugh. His favorite place to laugh was around the table with family and/or friends; eating or drinking coffee. That laughter will sure be missed, but those he leaves behind have a legacy of wonderful memories and lessons to help along the way.

Alfred leaves to mourn his passing, but celebrate his home-going 1 son, David and wife, Ana of Belize, Central America, grandchildren, David, Michelle, Donavan and Darren Sawatzky of Morden, step-grandson, Andy Vargas of Belize, 1 daughter, Mary Anne and husband, Peter Enns, grandsons, Jonathan, Josiah, Jeremiah, Joshua all of Rushford, Minnesota; sisters, Verna Enns of Morden, Dorothy and Jake Pauls of Winnipeg, Anna-Marie and Henry Bock of Morden; sister-in-law, Elma Sawatzky of Morden; brothers, Art and Leona Sawatzky of Cartwright, Ron and Ann Sawatzky of Chilliwack, BC, Harvey and Margaret Sawatzky of Portage la Prairie and brother-in-law, Ed G. and Margaret Elias of Winkler; sisters in law, Annie Elias of Winkler, Jessie Elias of Winnipeg; many nieces and nephews, cousins, neighbors, coffee shop friends both in Morden and Rushford and musical friends.

Sawatzky (nee Elias); 1 brother, Rudy Sawatzky; 1 sister in infancy, Esther Pearl; brother-in-law, Abe Enns; nephew, Mervin Sawatzky; extended family including many aunts and uncles, cousins and extended in-laws.
