1928 - 2010

PoetkerJohnSQ.jpgOn Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Salem Home in Winkler, Manitoba John Poetker, aged 81 years, formerly of Arnaud, Manitoba, went to his eternal rest.

John was born on August 19, 1928, in Arnaud, Manitoba, the third of 4 children to Rev. John H. and Elizabeth Poetker. Growing up, John worked with his father on the farm, already driving the tractor at the age of 9 but he also had very early memories of hauling grain with his Dad using horses. He attended school in Arnaud from Grade 1 to Grade 11. After graduation from Grade 11, John worked in Winnipeg until he, his brother and father opened Poetker’s Garage. In 1949, on June 5, he was baptized on his confession of faith in the Arnaud Mennonite Church. John married Ursula Penner on July 21, 1956. He raised 3 children of his own and opened his home to caring for foster children who usually arrived in twos and even three at a time. In 1979, the cherished youngest member arrived and was adopted into his family. After 20 years of working in Poetker’s Garage, John and his brother closed the business and bought farm land close to Arnaud. John farmed and worked as a free lance mechanic until he retired. In 1998, Ursula and John left Arnaud to move into their new home in Winkler. Unfortunately his health slowly declined. Eventually he needed to be hospitalized and then was moved to Salem Home where he lived out the remaining two years of his life with his devoted wife at his side every single day.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Ursula (nee Penner); 1 daughter, Elvina and her husband, Eric Peters of Gnadenthal, MB; 3 sons, Ray and his wife, Linda Poetker of Abbotsford, BC; Nelson Poetker of Abbotsford, BC; and Robert Poetker of Winkler, MB; 6 grandchildren, Jason, Kristen and Mitchell Peters; Andrea and her husband, Jonathan O'Connor, Amanda and her husband, Wayne Koop, Jared Poetker; 2 great-grand children, Alexander and Caroline O'Connor; 2 sisters, Betty Loepp and Mary Toews; and 1 sister-in-law, Wilma Poetker.

John was pre-deceased by his parents Rev. John H. and Elizabeth Poetker and his younger brother, Jacob.

Memorial service was held on Friday, April 23 at 2:30 p.m. at the Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church. Interment took place at Westridge Memorial Gardens in Winkler prior to the service.
