Elisabeth Peters (nee Teichroeb)

1913 -2010

peters elizabeth4.jpgOn Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at Salem Home in Winkler, MB Elisabeth Peters, aged 96 years went to her eternal rest.

Elisabeth was born on August 11, 1913 in Schanzenfeld, SK (Swift Current Reserve). She had four brothers and 8 sisters. At around the age of 10, they moved to Mexico. They only stayed there for a short time. On the train back to Canada, she celebrated her 12th birthday. As a 13 year old, she was hired out to an English family where she worked as a maid and she also did a lot of the outside work. In addition she worked for at least five other families until 1938. She was baptized upon the confession of her faith in 1935 by Bishop David Doerksen in the Chortitz Sommerfeld Church near Swift Current. She was 22 years old. In 1937, she moved to Manitoba. On December 11, 1938 she got married to Henry G. Peters in the Plum Coulee Sommerfeld Church. She had four sons and two daughters. They lived in Kronsgart, Hochfeld, Rosengart, Haskett, Plum Coulee, Morden and Winkler during their married life.

She was a very compassionate wife who faithfully cared for her husband who struggled with chronic bronchitis all of their married life. She worked in the beet fields and also various other filed work. Often she did this together with her family. She would always work from early morning and late into the night. One reason for this was so that her children would have time to play. She has also worked for at least four years in either sewing or canning factories. In 1974, they moved to Winkler where they retired. She spent many hours reading to her husband after he lost his eyesight. She loved working with her flowers and making a garden every year. She was also a person who derived great pleasure from visiting with others.

In January of 2000, she was admitted to various hospitals. Her hospital stay lasted a year and a half. Then she moved into Salem where she was until her passing on March 24 with her family by her side.

She will be sadly missed by her son, Henry and Cecelia Peters of Swift Current, SK (3 sons, 1 daughter and their families); daughter, Gertrude Peters of Winkler; daughter-in-law, Deanne (Bill) Peters of Swift Current, SK (1 son, 3 daughters and their families); daughter, Margaret and Jake Knelsen of Austin (4 daughters and their families); son, Jacob Peters of Winnipeg. We mourn deeply but not without hope.

She was predeceased by husband Henry in March 1981; a son, Johnny in 1953 and son, Bill in 2007 and all of her siblings.

Funeral service was held on Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Winkler Sommerfeld Mennonite Church with interment at Winkler Cemetery.

We would like to say a special thank you to the staff of Salem Home. To all the kind and compassionate people who came to visit her and to those who prayed for her. Thank you to Rev. Abe Wiebe for his time during these last days and for doing the funeral service.

The glory of life is to love, not to be loved; to give, not to get; to serve, not to be served. Love is the true miracle and to the one who loves comes both wonder and joy.

Wiebe Funeral Home, Winkler in care of arrangements.
