David A. Peters

1921 - 2010

PetersDaveSQ.jpgOn Monday August 2, 2010 at Salem Home in Winkler, MB David A. Peters aged 89 years went to his eternal rest.

He was born to Aaron Peters and Katherina (nee Doerksen) on August 1, 1921 in the rural school district of Rosenbach. When he turned 14, his parents decided that his help was needed on the farm, so the formal education came to a halt and he worked with his father. In the early years, this involved four horses for fieldwork. The same horses were used to pull the buggy on shopping trips to town and to church.

At the age of 19, he joined the catechism class at the Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church and was baptized. For the next 20 years, this was his church home. By 1960, the church that he and his family were a part of decided to eliminate the English language in its services. In response to this, a group of concerned members began to meet for Bible study and prayer. Many of us children did not understand German. By Mother’s Day 1961, this prayer group decided to from a new English language congregation to provide for children and young people. The new group known as Grace Church grew rapidly and our parents felt privileged to be founding members.

By 1968, Dad had been working for Kroeker Farms and they entrusted dad to develop a potato operation in Outlook, SK. They were here until 1979. From 1979 until 1996, dad worked with the same organization in Portage La Prairie.

Mom’s health deteriorated and dad provided homecare for years and kept a full time job. When she was hospitalized and finally admitted to a care home, he provided devotion and love for Mother. Dad was a man of few words but they were words of love and support. Later on, he often expressed regrets to us that he did not have more time to spend with us kids. However, we will remember dad for the love and devotion to the family. Through his hard work, his honesty and work ethic, he set the example we try to follow.

He is survived by his 3 sons, Lorne and Marta Peters, Tim A. Peters and Derreck and Karen Peters as well as his brother, Walter and Mary Peters.

He was predeceased by our mother, Eveline (nee Dueck) in 1997.

Funeral service was held Saturday, August 9, 2010 at 11:00 am at Grace Mennonite Church with interment at Winkler Cemetery.

Wiebe Funeral Home, Winkler in care of arrangements.
