Michael Scott Nikkel

1974 - 2010

nikkel M.jpgOn Sunday August 15, 2010 at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Michael Nikkel aged 36 years, of Altona, MB went to his eternal rest.

Michael Scott Nikkel was born April 17, 1974 in Winkler, MB. He grew up on the family farm in the Blumstein area SW of Winkler; receiving his education in the Winkler schools. As a boy, he accepted Jesus as his personal Saviour while attending Winkler Bible Camp and was baptized upon confession of his faith prior to high school graduation. His faith was strengthened by attending Bethany Bible Institute in Saskatchewan after high school. He attended the University of Manitoba until November of 1993 when through an accident which broke his leg, bone cancer was detected. The subsequent radical amputation and gruelling 6 months of chemotherapy put his education on hold for a year and a half. It was only through much determination and perseverance and the assistance of a prosthetic leg that he was able to continue his post secondary education. He emerged with his Bachelor of Education degree with a double major in history and fine arts. WC Miller Collegiate in Altona became the first beneficiary of his teaching skills. After only a few years of fulltime teaching, it became evident that this work load was too rigorous for his delicate and soon to be deteriorating physical condition. He began to substitute teach in the elementary grades when he could.

Mike began to develop gastrointestinal problems in his teens, which was later diagnosed as a rare condition known as "Pseudo-obstruction syndrome". This resulted in many visits to the hospital, some of which lasted moths at a time. He was no stranger to pain, having suffered much of his relatively short life. God saw fit to relieve him of his pain unexpectedly on Sunday August 15, 2010 when he peacefully floated to heaven to meet his Lord and Saviour.

Left to cherish fond memories are his parents, Larry and Laura Nikkel of Winkler; 2 brothers, Tony and Char Nikkel of Morden and their children Victoria and Hudson, Steve and Michele Nikkel of Winkler and their children, Kaylee, Carter and Addison as well as his grandmother, Susan Hildebrand and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by grandparents, Henry E. Nikkel, Elizabeth Nikkel and Ben Hildebrand.

Funeral service was held on Friday August 20, 2010 at 10:30 am at Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church with interment at Westridge Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to thank the medical staff in the Altona Hospital, the Health Sciences Centre, Boundary Trails Health Centre, Wiebe Funeral Home, the pastors, family and friends for their care, concern and compassion demonstrated to us.
