Bernhard “Ben” Hildebrand

1923 - 2009

On Saturday, January 24, 2009 at Boundary Trails Health Centre, Ben Hildebrand, aged 85 years of Winkler, MB formerly of the Kronsgart district peacefully passed into glory with his family at his side.

Bernhard ‘Ben’ Hildebrand was born November 22, 1923 to Bernhard A. and Margaret

(nee Suderman) Hildebrand at Kronsgart, MB.  His early years were spent attending Grade 1-8 at the Kronsgart school, then taking Grade 9 by correspondence.  Being the oldest child, further education was not an option.  He was required to stay home, help with chores, farm and provide means of support for the household and his 9 younger siblings.

In 1948, along with his new bride Susie Banman, a farm of their own was established a short distance from his paternal home.  Dad started his own carpentry business shortly thereafter.  This venture spanned a total of some 40 years.  The highlight of this career was his involvement in the construction of the current Winkler M.B. Church.

As a youth Dad accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and was baptized on this faith in March, 1980, joining the Winkler M.B. Church.  Here he was involved in the Board of Trustees and the Boys Brigade Program.  He served as a Secretary Treasurer for most of his adult life in numerous organizations including the Kronsgart School, Winkler Curling Club, Stanley Ag Society and the Friendship Centre.  His leisure time activities included fishing, traveling, curling and reading.  He delighted in the accomplishments and successes of his children and grandchildren, and likewise shared heartfelt concern for their struggles.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Susie (nee Banman) of Winkler; 2 daughters, 2 sons; 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren as well as 4 sisters and 3 brothers.

He was predeceased by 1 sister and 2 brothers.

Funeral service was held on Thursday January 29, 2009 at 10:30 am at Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church with interment at Bloomfield-Rosewell Cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Ben’s memory to either Boundary Trails Health Centre Palliative Care Box 2000 Winkler, MB R6W 1H8 or to St. Boniface Hospital Research Foundation (Cancer Research) 409 Tache St. Room D 1003 Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6.
