James "Jim" Mathew Godkin

1936 - 2009

Jim GodkinSQ.jpgJim Godkin was born on the home farm north of Morden in the Dunston District in 1936 to Laurence and Peggy Godkin. Jim farmed with his father until 1973 when Laurence passed away. Jim took over the farm and continued to live with his mother Peggy. Never married, Jim dedicated his life to the farm. He loved working with animals raising cattle for many years and later on venturing into sheep. One of Jim’s favourite pastimes involved old time thrashing. Jim and his friends owned a set of nine white mules which they used to put on old time farming demonstrations. They traveled to fairs such as Austin to participate in various harvesting competitions. Jim enjoyed 4H as a youth, hunting with his buddies, and curling in the winter. Deteriorating health meant he could no longer continue farming so he moved to town in 2001. Jim was hospitalized in 2008 and moved to Tabor Home in October of 2009 where he passed away quietly in his sleep on December 24, 2009.

Jim was predeceased by his father, Laurence in 1973, his sister, Lois Moffatt in 1987, and his mother, Peggy in 1995. Jim is survived by his sister, Loreen Lyman, his Aunt Donalda Gibb of Carman, nieces, Donna Lee Moffatt, Dianne Munro of Morden, and Xan Moffatt-Toews of Fairview, Alberta; nephews, Dennis Branfield of Morden, Glyn Moffatt and Kim Moffatt of Fairview as well as 11 great nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Private family ash interment took place prior to the service at Hillside Cemetery. Memorial service on Wednesday December 30, 2009 at 11:00 am was held at Wiebe Funeral Chapel in Morden with lifetime neighbor, Jake Friesen presiding.

A special thank you to all the wonderful staff and doctors at BTHC, Legion House #1, and Tabor Home for all the patient care Jim received over the last few years.
