Helen Friesen (nee Schapansky)

1919 - 2009

Friesen Helen 8x10.jpgIt is with deep sorrow that we announce that on Thursday August 27, 2009 at Tabor Home in Morden, MB, Helen Friesen aged 89 years formerly of Dunston, MB went to her eternal rest.

Mom and dad were married in 1939 and farmed as a team in the Dunston District until 1972 when they retired to Nelson Street in Morden. After retirement, Mom stayed active in the Dunston Community Club attending meetings, quilting bees, and working at various events.

For many years mom was a member of the United Church Women’s Auxiliary and was the organizer of the Morden Volunteer Choir for the United Church. She was very proud of their many performances. She also spent many years volunteering at the Morden Thrift Store.

Her main passion in life was her curling with the Action Group which brought her much joy and many trophies. She loved to watch all sports on T.V. but curling was her favorite and she could talk curling with the best of them. However nothing was better than having her family come home for a visit. Mom lived a very active life maintaining her own house and yard and even drove her own car to Winnipeg until she was 85.

She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter, Joyce Stevenson and her son, Ken and Eleanor Friesen;

grandsons, Grant Stevenson (Dana), Jeffrey Stevenson (Rochelle), Kelsey Friesen (Michelle) and granddaughter, Kailee Friesen as well as four great grandchildren Mackenzie, Brenlee, Lucas, and Taya Stevenson. She also leaves to mourn two sisters, Ann Enns and Betty (Dave) Petkau as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, J.M. Friesen in 1993 and her grandson, Kent Stevenson.

Memorial service was held on Saturday September 5, 2009 at 2:00 pm at St. Paul’s United Church in Morden, MB. Private family ash interment was at Southside Cemetery.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Tabor Home and Salem Home staff for the wonderful love and care she received during her stays there.

If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Tabor Home Building Fund, 230 9th Street, Morden, Manitoba R6M 1Y3
