Katie G

Katie G. Berg (nee Regier)

1938 - 2009

Berg lkatie SQ.jpgKatie G. Berg was born in Watrous Saskatchewan on January 25, 1938 to Abraham and Agatha Regier. She grew up on her parent’s farm near Watrous and attended the Plymouth school. It was while living in the Watrous area that she accepted Jesus as her personal Saviour, and was baptized upon the confession of her faith in the Philadelphia MB Church in Watrous. In 1952, her parents retired to Winnipeg where Katie attended MBCI for several years.

After attending 1 year at Winkler Bible Institute and another year in Teachers College, she began her teaching career which was interrupted by Henry when he came along and proposed marriage. Henry and Katie were married July 13, 1963 after a 10 month engagement. Two days after their first year wedding anniversary, their first son, Anthony David made his appearance known on July 15, 1964 and Katie became a stay at home Mom at their home in Alberta. Chad Henry was born December 27, 1965, and Samuel Glen born June 14, 1969.

In 1976, the family moved to Winkler, MB where Katie got involved in substitute teaching in public as well as private schools, Church work including Sunday School and Deaconess, working at the local Co-op, Salem Home, and as a Home Care attendant. Shortly after her retirement at age 65, she developed symptoms that were eventually diagnosed as MSA or Multiple Systems Atrophy, a condition that presently has no cure. This condition over the last 6 years of her life caused a steady loss of various abilities such as walking, talking, any motor skills, and eventually, swallowing food or any liquids became impossible. A blood clot in her leg became reason to be admitted to BTHC. Her bodies’ inability to process any source of solids or liquids brought on complications in her lungs and heart. After 10 days of this struggle, her loving Lord invited her to come home to be with him.

On Sunday October 18, 2009, at 3:15am, she experienced her last breath, with her sons Chad and Sam at her side. She passed on peacefully, just as many friends and family prayed for on her behalf. As a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, she will be dearly missed. She was always a gentle, loving person, with a heart for the Lord, and we all look forward to seeing her again in Heaven.

She was predeceased by her father and mother, her sister, Marge Hildebrand (nee Regier), son, Anthony (Tony), and brother, Abe Regier.

She leaves to mourn her husband of 46 years, Henry Berg of Winkler, son, Chad and Agatha, (Allison, Kristie, Jasmine), son, Sam and Trish, (Janessa, Dana, and Robyn).

Funeral service was held Friday October 23, 2009 at 11:00 am at Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church with interment at Westridge Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Katie’s memory to Children’s Camps International 300 – 571 Main St. Winkler, MB R6W 1E8.
