Helen Penner (nee Derksen)

1914 - 2009

Penner Helen SQ.jpgOn Sunday March 1, 2009 at Evergreen Place Personal Care Home in Boissevain, MB Helen Penner aged 94 years formerly of Winkler left this life for glory, her heavenly home.

Helen was born to David and Susanna Derksen on April 30, 1914 in the village of Fischau in southern Ukraine. She attended the village school for 5 years. She came to Canada in 1927 with her parents. Helen had no formal public school education in Canada but in the ‘40’s she attended Winkler Bible School for several years, after which she took enough courses in high school for credit towards nurses training. She trained in Brandon Mental Hospital graduating with a proficiency award in mental health nursing.

In 1958, she married Aron Penner, a farmer in the Morden area and together they farmed, until for health reasons they moved to Winkler. Besides being a helpmeet for Aron, she was also the care giver to Aron’s aging mother who lived with them. Aron passed away in 1974 and Helen continued in her home, looking after his mother who died in 1975 at age 99.

Helen decided to follow Christ in her teen years and was baptized upon confession of her faith. Helen’s strong faith kept her going through difficult life situations. She will be remembered as a wonderful friend, a sensitive listener and encourager. She was also a prayer warrior. Hospitality was her gift and also, her flowers gave her much joy.

She leaves to mourn, her brothers David of Leamington, ON and Peter of Boissevain, MB and 16 nephews and nieces.

She was predeceased by her husband Aron; her parents; 3 sisters Tina, Anna and Susie; brother, Henry and 4 siblings in infancy.

Funeral service was held on Wednesday March 4, 2009 at 11:30 am at Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church.  Interment followed at Winkler Cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Helen’s memory to MBMSI Action (Mennonite Brethren Mennonite Services International) Project C0596, Bon Berger Medical Clinic, Kinshasa DR Congo 83 Henderson Hwy. Winnipeg, MB R2L 1L2.
