Percy Elmer Enns

1929 - 2009

Enns Percy SQ.jpgPeacefully on Tuesday, June 23, 2009at Salem Home in Winkler, with his family by his side, Percy was able to leave his struggles behind (including Alzheimer’s disease) and enter a place of well-earned rest.

Percy was born in Winkler to William M. and Margaret (nee Loewen) Enns on June 11, 1929, the youngest of five children.

He joined the Winkler Volunteer Fire Department at the age of 16 and retired from active service in 1984; the last 20 years of which he was Chief ("Let’s Roll")

Percy and Loreen were married on September 2, 1951. They were both baptized in the Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church on May 17, 1957. Later, they became members of the Grace Mennonite Church where he faithfully attended until he became ill.

He also enjoyed and worked hard at farming, trucking and fishing with his "buddies" and met some of them for EARLY breakfasts as long as he was able to.

Percy is survived by his wife of 57 years, Loreen (nee Loewen); three daughters and their families, Dolores and Leslie Friesen of Minnedosa (Megan and Murray Penner, Kenneth and Melanie, Daniel, Derek, Jessica), Jocelyn and Larry Friesen of Winkler (Tim, Ron), Melody and Ken Hamm of Winkler (Joshua, Tyler, Nolan); one sister, Connie and George Froese of Belleville, ON and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Kroeker, Hilda Wonnick and his only brother, Manfred.

Funeral service was held on Monday June 29, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Grace Mennonite Church. Interment followed at Winkler Cemetery.

We would like to extend special thanks to Pastor Gerald Neufeld for faithfully spending time with Percy at Salem Home; to the staff on Evergreen and Maple wards for the love and compassionate care extended to him and the family; and to Wiebe Funeral Home for their concern and help with arrangements.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Percy’s memory to the Firefighter’s Burn Fund Inc. 303 Garry St. Winnipeg, MB R3C 4J9.

Wiebe Funeral Home, Winkler in care of arrangements.
