Alyssa Michele Toews

1999 - 2008

Toews, Alyssa.jpgAlyssa Michele Toews entered into our family and our hearts on June 9, 1999.  She struggled at birth and was hospitalized in Winnipeg until she was 7 weeks old.  Alyssa was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at 6 months.  At this time, we had no idea the interesting ride Alyssa would take us on.  She had many health problems and frequently had seizures, ear infections and pneumonia.  We visited the clinic and the Emergency Room often and we got to know the doctors and nurses.  They always treated Alyssa well and we thank them for that.

When Alyssa was smaller, we liked to go camping.  Alyssa loved the whole camping experience from going for walks and swimming at the beach to sitting by the fire.

In 2004, we took Alyssa to Watrous, SK to have treatments in a Hyper Baric Oxygen tank.  We saw some improvements in her hand control.  Also in 2004, she had her first school experience.  She attended Kids Korner Nursery School and loved interacting with the other kids.  Before she started Nursery School, we changed her medications and we got to know a new Alyssa.  That was the first time we ever heard her laugh out loud.

In 2005, she started attending Winkler Elementary School.  From the first day, she loved school.  She made new friends in her classroom and in Special Ed and had wonderful E.A.’s to help her learn new things.  Alyssa was never impressed to see mom show up at school.  That was her special time and she didn’t want mom to interfere.  When she came home on the bus, Alyssa was always excited to tell us about her day.

In October of 2006, we had the opportunity to visit Disney World in Florida.  Alyssa enjoyed seeing Mickey and Minnie Mouse and so much more.  What she always enjoyed most was spending time with family.  In the summer of 2007, our family took a trip to BC for a family wedding.  On the way back to Manitoba, Alyssa was able to experience the Calgary Stampede and West Edmonton Mall.  She was able to enjoy many family adventures.

In Alyssa’s 8 years, 11 months and 1 day, there were seldom times when she would cry.  The only time we saw her shed tears was in the last month when her hip hurt and she was in so much pain.  She was a very happy and content girl who loved to be talked to and bugged by Ryan and Stacey.  They always liked to climb into Alyssa’s bed and cuddle with her.  She loved her brother and sister very much.

Some of the things Alyssa enjoyed were “This Little Piggy”, listening to music and being one on one with someone.  Another thing Alyssa liked was to look at lights and the sunshine.  This earned her the nickname of Sunshine Girl; that and because she brought sunshine to our lives every day.  Anyone who got to know Alyssa with her beautiful brown eyes and sweet smile learned to love her.  Alyssa got excited when we prayed with her, it seemed like she had a very close connection with God.

On April 17, Alyssa had hip surgery.  The surgery went well but she had a hard time recovering.  On May 10, 2008 at Boundary Trails Health Centre, Alyssa went to meet Jesus.

She will be missed by her parents, Ivan and Rhonda Toews of Winkler; brother, Ryan and sister, Stacey.  Alyssa also leaves behind, Grandpa Abe and Grandma Sadie, Grandpa Dave and Grandma Tena, Uncle Lyle and Auntie Sadie, Uncle Darrell, Uncle Ben and Auntie Jo, Uncle James and Auntie Jaime, cousins, Bailey, Eric, Cole, Joshua, Megan, Matthew and Cameryn.  Waiting for Alyssa in heaven are her Grandpa Herman and cousin, Riley.

Funeral service was held on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at 2:00 pm at Faith Evangelical Bible Church with Rev. Mike Comtois officiating.  Interment followed at Winkler Cemetery.

The family would like to thank everyone for the show of love and support through the many prayers said on our behalf, the gifts of flowers and food.  Thank you to Dr. Lane for helping us take care of Alyssa.  Thank you to the nursing staff and doctors who took good care of Alyssa during the numerous times we came into Emergency.  Thank to Pastor Mike and Renee for their support.  Thanks to Wiebe Funeral Home for taking care of the arrangements.
