SchmidtPeterP.jpgOn Monday September 29, 2008 at Boundary Trails Health Centre, Peter P. Schmidt aged 79 years of Winkler, MB went to his eternal rest.

Dad’s life was characterized by strength and hard work.  His entrepreneurial spirit led him to engage in many successful and creative ventures.  There was no task or challenge that could not be taken on.  When the farm needed machinery he went home and built it himself.  One of his great joys was working on the farm especially when he was working alongside his grandkids.  When working became difficult for him, just being at the farm was a highlight and he always knew every inch that was cultivated.  Despite his hearing disability, he maintained he could hear potatoes grow.  In Dad’s life plan, he figured he would farm until age 92 and then enjoy retirement.

The farm was not the only beneficiary of his hard work.  There was often a ‘to do list’ at his kids homes when he visited.  Bathrooms have been plumbed, electrical fixtures have been attached, sheds have been built and vehicles were fixed.  Dad was always eager to support his kids in Christian ministry even though he valued and loved to work, he would always try and fill in when his kids would go to a Christian Service Brigade during seeding or harvest.  He loved to see his children and grandchildren involved with the church and pursue a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  He faithfully participated in the life of his church, contributing his skills when needed.  He also spent several winters in Mexico doing voluntary service.  While his witness was not always verbal, his life reflected deep faith in God.

He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife, Mary (nee Blatz) his beloved wife of 58 years,

3 daughters, Helen and Victor Elias of Alliston, ON, Tina and Wes Dobson of Meadow Lake, SK, Linda and Darren Fast of Winnipeg; 2 sons, John and Louise, Peter and Hannah both of Winkler; 22 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren as well as his mother, Katarina (nee Reimer) Schmidt; 1 sister and 2 brothers.

He was predeceased by his father, Peter Schmidt in 1974; 1 brother infancy, 1 brother, Isaac, 1 grandson, Lindsay and 1 great grandson in infancy.

Funeral Service was on Friday October 3, 2008 at 11:00 am at Winkler Sommerfeld Mennonite Church with Rev. Art Wiebe officiating.  Interment followed at Chortitz Old Colony Cemetery.
