Abram P. Letkeman

1914 - 2007

On Friday, February 2, 2007, Abram P. Letkeman aged 92 years of Winkler, formerly of Morden and Wakeham, MB went to his heavenly home.

Dad was born on July 3, 1914 in the district of Wakeham to Peter J. and Aganetha Letkeman. He was raised and educated in the same area. After school, he farmed with his father and brothers.

Upon confession of his faith he was baptized on June 7, 1938, into the Rudnerweider Mennonite Gemeinde. On Aug. 6, 1944, Dad married Elizabeth Janzen. They settled just south of his parents homestead, along the US boarder. This union was blessed with one daughter and five sons. On April 6, 1960, Elizabeth passed away of cancer, leaving Dad with 6 children ranging in age from one to 14. Dad made sure the family stayed together. The following two years were very difficult for dad and the children. Much support from family and friends made this difficult time easier.

On July 14, 1962 Dad married Margaret Harder. To this union another son was born. They enjoyed farming until 1996. He also worked as a carpenter during these years on numerous carpentry projects both large and small. Dad was known as an excellent finishing carpenter.

Due to failing eyesight, Mom and Dad sold the farm and moved to Morden. They lived in Morden until they found it too difficult to maintain their yard. In 2005 they moved to a new location in Winkler.

Over the last several months, Dad’s health deteriorated. He was hospitalized several times, and on February 7, 2007 he passed away.

He is survived by his beloved wife Margaret, 1 daughter, Ruth and Frank Klassen of Winnipeg; 6 sons, Richard and Martha Letkeman of Winkler, Ron and Denise Letkeman of New Westminster BC, Albert and Pearl Letkeman of Morden, Robert and Laurel Letkeman of Morden, Raymond and Brenda Letkeman of Morden, Gerald and Wendy Letkeman of Winkler. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, their spouses and 6 great-grandchildren. Additionally he is survived by 3 brothers and 6 sisters and their families.

He was predeceased by his first wife Elizabeth and two brothers.

Funeral service was held on Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Randy Smart and Martin Harder officiating.  Interment followed at the Haskett Cemetery.

Our beloved father and husband will be missed, but we sorrow not as those who have no hope. We shall meet again.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Abe’s memory to the Family Life Network 225 Riverton Ave. Winnipeg, MB R2L 0N1.

Wiebe Funeral Home, Winkler in care of arrangements.
