Our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Helen Hildebrand passed away quietly in her sleep early Tuesday morning, October 9, 2007 at the age of 78 years at the Boundary Trails Health Centre.

Mom was born on March 16, 1929 to parents, Cornelius and Gertrude Wall.  She grew up in Friedensruh with her 6 brothers; Cornie, Jake, Peter, Abe, Henry and twin brother Dave, as well as 3 sisters, Tina, Mary and Gertie.  She was baptized in the Old Colony Church in Chortitz.  On October 18, 1949 Mom married a young farmer, Abe J. Hildebrand.  They made their home in Greenfarm and raised 5 children – Alvin, Harold, Brenda, Ralph and Eileen.  They remained in Greenfarm until April of this year, when they moved to Winkler.  Mom & Dad’s 58th wedding anniversary would have been celebrated this coming Thursday.

Mom loved flowers, but due to allergies, could not have live ones in the home.  However, red & white petunias were planted beside the driveway every summer to greet those coming for a visit.  She had a servant attitude and loved to cook for her family.  The garden bounty of potatoes, corn, peas, beans and soup herbs was always shared with the children and gatherings were always a treat.  Although her education was limited, Mom taught us how to live, laugh and keep things uncomplicated by her approach to life’s joys and struggles.

She suffered a stroke about 3 years ago, which resulted in a constant state of dizziness.  This, however, did not deter her from living out her servanthood lifestyle as best she could.  Mom was not feeling well when we gathered for Christmas this past December, but she said she’d be fine.  Things did not improve and on January 1 of this year she was admitted to Boundary Trails Health Center, where she was diagnosed with cancer.  Since then she has been in and out of the hospital a number of times, but we have never heard her complain.  On August 16 she was once again admitted and 7 weeks later, God saw fit to take her to His heavenly home rather than back to her home on South Railway.

Left to treasure her memories are her husband, Abe, 3 sons, 2 daughters, 12 grandchildren and their families:  Alvin & Marlene Hildebrand and their sons, Jeremy & Darren, Harold & Linda Hildebrand and their children, Chad & Tina & Mike, Brenda & Abe Giesbrecht and their children, Mandi & Jason Hildebrand, Chris, Richard, Scott, Ralph & Kathy Hildebrand, Eileen & Alvin Funk and their children, Rachel, Rebecca, James and Joshua.

Mom was predeceased by her parents, Cornelius and Gertrude Wall; 4 brothers, Cornie, Jake, Peter and Abe; and 1 sister, Tina.

A service of celebration of Mom’s life was held at the Winkler EMMC on Sunday, October 14, 2007 with Pastor Wilbert Friesen officiating.  Interment followed at Winkler Cemetery.

Thanks to Joey Grenier and staff at Wiebe Funeral Home, Winkler for their support and kindness in looking after arrangements.

God has not promised a calm passage as we travel through this life on earth, but promises a “safe landing” for all who love Him.  Mom has experienced the reality of a “safe landing” and we know that she is now resting in the arms of Jesus, whom she loved.  For this we are grateful.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Helen’s memory to Gideon Memorial Bible Plan Box 778 Winkler, MB R6W 4A8.

Wiebe Funeral Home, Winkler in care of arrangements.
